The job I am having done is for a new LS6 with headers and a cam,
They know that I am an NYPD Detective and they have friends on the job whose cars they have worked on. My instincts about them tell me they are professional.

UH... you are an NYPD detective and you don't smell a rat here? You need to pull out your Sherlock Holmes Spyglass and take a closer look.
I don't expect you non LEO's to know my job. I would expect you to ask questions and I would then reply and assist you.
Thats why I am ASKING the forum. I am using a tool that I thought would be helpful. DO NOT even try to diminish my skills as a Detective. When it comes to having a major engine swap done I am sure that I am not alone in not having all the answers.
I did research new engines and saw some pricing. Not one seemed to be for a complete engine. Maybe I am wrong.
I researched Vette Doctors and heard and read nothing but TOP NOTCH things about them. If they are ripping me off it will hurt them more than it will hurt me. I don't believe they are. A company does not get high marks and praise from other forum members by ripping people off.
If anyone can offer sound and valuable insight, I welcome it.
Bobby A
I feel for you, you've been put in a difficult position. I would tell them to hold off until you have the time to gather more information. David

PS You might want to call your local dealers and ask what their prices are.

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
alot of folks here are telling you that the price you've been quoted is high. That should tell ya something
They are right....seems to be very high for an ls1 engine and install. They are just trying to help you out so you don't get screwed over.
sorry to hear about your car... good luck with the replacement/repairs
I just called Dennis at Vette Doctors and more or less have told them about the thread. He said he will be calling me back with the exact details and breakdown of what will be happening.
I reminded him of the great reputation of his shop and that I am sure they know what they are doing. However I need to know exactly what they are doing and charging me for. I have a feeling that I may have been a bit aloof about the details and thats my fault.
Lets see what they come back with.
*** If anyone knows Dennis or Carmine please chime in and possibly call on my behalf if you are more knowledgeable than I am.

good luck (tough spot to be in)

I would say though, that 9800 for a stock engine is high, something is not adding up...but we have not seen the breakdown of what you are getting for that, so when vettedoctors gets back to you , that will be interesting to see. I would at the very least call around to a few other good shops, maybe ECS or something and get a few quotes. This is a big job obviously, so I would take a bit more time and shop.
This forum is great, but as you have seen, (and with any public forum) it has no shortage of douchebags who like to behave like azzhats...just ignore.
Good luck and keep us posted on progress.
Perhaps VD is quoting high for insurance purposes and will actually
charge you less or let you slide for the balance and deductible?
And if you haven't made a claim, you should do so ASAP.
A $10K bill is exactly why we buy insurance.

You don't need a complete motor, just a long block. All the sensors, intake, oil pan, water pump, brackets, etc ... are transferable to your new motor.
I sent you to a link for a very nice motor. You could add higher compression pistons if you are going to run naturally aspirated (N/A).
You should be spending no more than $10K with headers, install and tune. Add another $1.5K if you upgrade clutch.
I am not filing a false claim.
For the person who inferred that I am taking my nephews money lightly I would refer him to my original thread and how it has been bothering me to do so and I have wrestled with it.
However, be advised, I was not driving the car when this event occurred and I am NOT paying for it. My sister is on board with this and my brother in law could give a rats azz about him.
Therefore, thats why I am in the position that I am in.
Not a comfortable one by any means. I am hoping nobody gets ripped off and a lesson is learned.
And I want my car back : )

PS No word yet from the shop

this is a good one. Listen & learn
