Default Hud Lamp Longevity

how long of a lifespan do the HUD lamps have??? anybody had to replace one??? mine seems a little dim during the day, but we've had some really bright sunshine days lately, so that may be the reason.

just curious.

Never seen anything on replacing the bulb either...hopefully they used LED's for longevity?

Mine's been going strong since 2003, I have it on full blast everytime I drive.

I actually find it very frustrating when I drive any other car because I've come to rely on it so much.

There is no bulb in the HUD. It uses a VFD display (Vaccume Florescent Display). These displays have been around for years. At worst if it goes out you would have to replace the whole projector assembly. At best if it like the ones used in Pontiac Grand Prix's there is a photo resistor that either fails or has a cold solder joint.

I have not had the opportunity to disassemble one yet.

Yeah, when i get out of the vette and drive the patrol cars around for 8-9 hours a day, it frustrates me not seeing the speed on the windshield. But anywho, mines been running strong since it was sold at the end of 2001.

My car was over 8 years old when I sold it and had 35K miles on it - and no problems with the HUD. Perhaps someone with a lot more miles on their car can chime in on whether they have had problems.

Hi Guys -

I have a 99 coupe with HUD, and a 2002 Z with HUD - both cars have ~53k miles on them.

The HUD display on both cars are annoyingly bright with the slider at the max position, and we have had no problems with either car's HUD to date.

best regards -

I have a 2000 coupe and I seem to have a dim HUD too. At first I thought it was just bright outside but I compared it to a buddies and its def dimmer. Anyone else have this problem?

I had to replace the HUD on my '99 due to the light sensor was failing. Time for me to replace it was 2.5 hours. I took the old one totally apart and found the sensor was still buried under the plastic so rather than trying to repair it, I had already bought a new HUD, so I just installed the new one and was done with it.

Thats interesting the HUD has its own light sensor? Maybe mine is dirty or covered is there a way you can tell without pulling it out?

The sensor is in the small hole at the very top of the HUD and it runs horizontally towards the rear of the car. That sensor controls the brightness of the display with the front control setting the desired brightness.
