OK.... I'm going to start a fight here i assume but I want Borla Stingers. Been putting them off for a year...HOWEVER!
I've read about the DRONE and I'd like to hear from both sides... the people that hate it and the people that think it's much to do about nothing....
I see there's a place I can get cat backs for $750 which is cool.
I have a 99 auto coup
Thanks
i had borla with an x pipe (no cats) on my 00 frc... drove me nukin futs... the stereo was worthless, you could not carry on a conversation inside the car at normal speaking levels.... drone was 1600-2500 basically the entire rpm range where you would drive and accelerate... i have corsa on my car now with high flow cats...would not trade them for the world...
I can't comment on the stingers but I had a local shop weld up Borla ss drag mufflers to the oem ss cross over pipes, added borla tips and it is sweet with no drone....I tried a set of Ti's and it just did not do it "for me" ......but these things are great much much better at idle than the ti's and like a monster at wide open throttle but for cruising they are also great absolutely zero problem talking low and hearing the stereo turned down-no drone and I have long tubes,no cats andan x-pipe... installed total was 550.00
I don't a drone from mine. I've made several trips a week at around 70-75 and I can hardly hear them. If it's droning it's very light. When I accelerate it will wake the dead. But not with the cruise set at 70.
I've had the Stingers for three years now. There is a slight drone around 1500 rpm. It is not annoying. I CAN use the stereo and my wife and I CAN have a conversation. The drone goes away above 1500 so it isn't a constant issue.
From: Wylie TX --> Less is More, except under the hood !
I pulled off my Corsa Touring's and went with GHL Bullets, and there is NO drone and NO resonance.... Even on my heads/cam car! I'm very impressed. VERY deep sound and wicked idle. I was really worried about the drone/resonance. I was very happy to find out this exhaust is all business, and no downsides !
I am however working thru a Manufacturing issue with my drivers tips being unlevel. I am working with GHL now, and hope to have it resolved in a few weeks.
it seems to change from person to person but also from day to day. I have borlas with an otherwise stock exhaust system. making a C5 sound good is not an easy thing to do, and Borla was the best I had heard with alot of research. over 3000 rpm's the sound is just amazing. below that its not all that great, but still better than anything else out there. I've heard a car with corsas before and it sounded terrible. if you like that sound then go for them, way too much high frequency and no rumble.
borla Drone in my car is almost 0 below 1500. driving at 60-65 in 6th the wind noise overpowers the sound of the exhaust. the drone starts almost immediately at 1500-1550. there is drone all the way up to 3000 although its only bad between 1500 and 2000. most of the time even then its not bad at all. but some days it is. its very strange. I wonder how much atmospheric pressure and humidity etc affect the sound. in the last year I've had them only once have I had it get loud enough that it bothered me. other times in the exact same rpm range its not bad at all. I'm not sure what's different.
one thing for sure, 6th gear going about 70-75 at 1600rpm or so trying to go up a hill is the absolute worst. but you can always shift into 5th.
I know your car is an auto, so you may have a different experience than I do.
I've also read on the forum that some say headers make the drone much worse, and others have said that headers made the drone go away. I have no idea what to think.
Man I'am so lost on this thing..... There doesn't seem to be much of a middle ground. People that hate it HATE IT! And the people that love the sound love it. I agree I think they have the best sound on the market but I just don't know how badly that drone is going to drive me nuts. All that being said I can't stand my car not sounding like a Corvette with the stocks on there. GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
I don't get it. I have a fairly aggressive cam, LT headers, stock cats (no pup cats) and Bassani x-pipe. My Stingers don't drone at all!! I had a custom built exhaust on before that droned bad. I installed the Stingers, worried about the dreaded drone, and was very pleasantly surprised. These are much quieter on the road and sound bad *** when opened up. Buy them!

That is exactly my experience with my Stingers as well.
my stinger's drone was very bad around 16 to 1700 in 6th gear. i had to get rid of it.
went to corsa and love them.
Yep... same here.
I had Borla Stingers for 3 months and 3000 miles and I couldn't wait to get rid of them. Use the cell phone, carry on a conversation while cruising down the freeway?... forget it.
But not to upset the Borla fans out there, I admit they sounded great and I particularly loved the gurgle I got when slowing down. As a testament to their popularity, once I put them up in the C5 Parts section, they were sold locally within 3 days.
I ultimately went with Corsa Pace cars and I think they are the greatest. They truly perform as they are advertised... they are whisper quiet during freeway cruising, but when you hit the gas they come alive. They have a higher pitched tone which does not appeal to some, but I love it. I plan on keeping these for life.
Ultimately, it boils down to a decision of personal taste.
Well here's an idea..... anyone in or near Phila that have to willing to let me have a listen to decide. I don't think we have any shows coming up anytime soon but if we do I'd love to hook up for 5 mins and check them out. I don't really want to buy something and take them off in 3 months all be it I don't think I would but you never know

Definitely a good idea. I hope someone out your way can help you out. As I noted above, I had my first exhaust for 3months/3000 miles and it was added cost to switch over. When I went to the new set, I made a point to hear them first.
When I bought my 97 A4 it was bone stock...first mod was the Stingers. They sounded absolutely badazz, but to be honest the drone would have made me nuts if it was a daily driver.
I upgraded a couple months later to LG Pro longtube headers and swapped in a 3.42 differential out of a Z06. With the change in gearing the drone has almost completely disappeared up to and including highway speeds...to say the least, I was thrilled with this added bonus from the changes made!
If you do find somebody in your area for an audition of the sound, make sure they have as similar a setup to your car as possible (mod-wise). The Borlas will sound completely different on a stock car then on a car like mine (blown with headers).
