Default Door hinge lubricant...?

Which would be the best grease or lubricant other than WD-40 that i can use on my driver door hinge? It makes this annoying loud squeak when you fully open it and right when you move it from full open to close it...

WD-40 seems to last only a few car washes, my passenger door looks/sounds/feels just fine, no squeaks...

Any input is appreciated.

I wouldn't use WD-40 --- it attracts dust and dirt...

I would use some grease instead.

White Lithium grease has been the standard lube for door hinges forever. It comes in a spray can. Any auto supply place will have it.

The biggest misconception is that WD-40 is not a lubricant or a way to grease up mechanical parts... it's actually a degreaser, rust prohibitor, and helps break down dirt, oil, or grease for cleanup.

Since i saw a bit of rust in that area, i cleaned it up with WD-40, then the noise went away for a few weeks...

It came back again but this time i will use white lithium grease to lubricate it per your recommendations...

Thanks guys!

WD40 was created in 1953 as a rust preventative solvent and de-greaser to protect early missle parts. The WD stands for "Water Displacement" and the 40 stands for the 40th formula that was successful.

The basic ingredient in it is, believe it or not, FISH OIL!

Fish oil? lol thats crazy, I like the background information on the stuff! I love WD-40 and use it on a ton of projects but as far as lubricating I make sure I use grease or some other product. With my other vehicle on another forum we would use lithium grease on and around our control arm bushings and guys that used WD-40 ran into more problems then people who didn't use it. Good info though but I think the question was answered...

But I wonder what the other 39 forumula's ended up doing or what they were made up of!

That's what I used on my '01 and it works great. Also works well on the garage door hinges.

WD40 isn't a lubricant. Techically, it diplaces water. Back in the days when cars had distributor caps, WD40 was the product to use in order to get rid of the moisture build up; it was also used for getting rid of moisture from your electrical system.

As far as a lubricant for door hinges, I will use just about anything but white lithium grease. I used to use Mobil1 spray lube but that's no longer made (about $13 for an 8 ounce can). After trying about a dozen different products, I found that Royal Purple synthetic spray lube has been the best alternative to the Mobil1 spay lubricant. Royal Purple was my last choice because I'm just not a fan of their products...but their spray lube is excellent & I may be wrong about their other products.

White Lithium on all hinges is the best bet.
