I am getting the active handling and service engine soon message and i pulled the codes the only 2 in history were located in 28-TCS code C1287 and C1288 both history codes. According to my info they are Steering position sensor circuit. This happens every other day or so and clears right away.
My question is has anyone encountered this and what was the fix and can it be done without help from the dealer?
My dad had the same exact thing happen in his C5. The fix is to replace the sensor which is located at the base of the steering column. It's definitely something you need to fix because, in my father's case, the car would jolt in one direction while driving—very unsafe.
You could probably replace the sensor by yourself if you have the time and knowledge; however, my dad had someone do it for him since neither of us are that knowledgeable about the steering column/electrical system.
I have the same issue. 1287 and 1288. I have the service manuals and I read the SWPS R&R procedure. Like me, if you have some skills, my guess is it's a 4 - 8 hour job. The dealership quoted me $350 for labor. I have seen the sensors on CF vendor sites for $70. HTH
I have seen some good posts with pics from people here who have done it. Keep us posted and good luck.
