Default Shock Install Help

Guys,

Searched some prior threads on this topic and have some questions.

This will be my first time doing this and want to see if anyone used these sites as guides:

http://www.c5forum.com/diy/shocks.php
http://fuzzydiceracing.com/test.htm

Are the steps accurate?

Also, in one thread, someone said they snapped the rear lower shock bolt when attempting to torque to 162ft-lb. I'm no expert, but man that seems like a helluva lot of torque! Is this accurate, I would think 75-100 would do the trick? Do you have to replace these bolts when replacing the shocks?

Thanks a ton.

I went with 04 Z06...

Read lots of good things about both...was a tossup for me. I don't like the yellow/blue combo so went with the plain black Z06. LOL

Also, reading that the GM engineers tuned them specifically for the C5 was a plus.

Those instructions will get you through the job fine.

The biggest thing I can tell you is to make sure you tie your shocks up real tight (compressed) before you remove the bolt...

Peace
Chip

Don't forget, Coronas are optional to your taste.

Someone else did my shocks as a courtesy, but I did use the Corona's when I lowered it, and installed the sway bars.

Same here, my Bilstein's should be here on Monday. I plan on following those how-to's too. But I hope I don't have any problems if I subsitute Bud Light instead of Corona though.....

Just installed the Bilstein shocks on my 2002 ZO6. Followed the directions listed above (fuzzydiceracing). Everything worked as diagramed. I did reuse the bolts on the rear shocks and didn't have any problem torqueing them to 162 lbs/ft. Use strong ties , the thin ones will break.

Following the steps in the 2nd link will get the job done. But you could make the job a little less work by just using a pry bar to compress the front shocks, instead of using a jack and all those zip ties. Once the bolts are removed from the front shocks just insert a pry bar under the bottom of the shock pry it up until compressed (holding it in the compressed position) and just wiggle it out. If you have a 2nd person it's easier but I did it myself without any help.

I had one of the rear shock bolts snap off trying to get to 162 ft lbs. The other one was no problem. Just bad luck I guess.

I'm NOT an engineer, but my gut tells me 162ftlbs is excessive!

Has anyone gone less than this?

I think I'll shoot for 100ftlbs!
