Aerodynamically speaking the Targa coupes will get the best milage, followed by the FRCs and finally verts (top down) A top-up vert would have roughly the same aerodynamic properties as the FRC.
My 97 has been slightly modified including larger 32lb lucas injectors but I still manage to get around 27 mpg at highway speeds.
If you have reasonable outdoor temperatures, turning the A/C off and setting the HVAC to vent will save you nearly 2-4 MPG and give you noticably more power.

For what its worth, when you go to WOT the A/C compressor disengages so the power is the same on or off.
I have the 3.15 axle, and get close to 20 in town, and close to 30 on the highway. Your mileage will be reduced if the fuel contains ethanol, since it has fewer btu's than 100% gasoline.
1998 automatic ... how can i find out which type of gears i have?
what is the difference between the 2, in terms of a) performance, b) mpg ? thanks
In your diferential there is a plaque, or by looking at the codes in your glove box, it will give you a 2.73 or a 3.15 differential that came from the factory with you A4. The 2.73 will get you up and going slower than the 3.15 will because of the reduced ratio. In MPG, I would say that you will get better MPG in town with the 3.15 because it's easier to get the car moving from a stop that a 2.73 will or might. On the highway, the 3.15 might get you less MPG than the 2.73 will. Now, if you cruise at WOT 24/7, you will get about 5MPG.

I have a 1999 coupe with the 3.15
City driving 19-22
Highway driving 28-32

those are assuming SD traffic (none) and eastern sd hills (practically none)
It's not an exciting drive, but i get good mpg.. lol
Do you have any aftermarket mods? Mine is bone stock w/ 2.73s and I'm at about 26 max at 85 on level pavement. I do have the Michelin "run flats" tho - - hear those can cut into your economy a bit.
