hi just sold my c6 z about a month ago and was gonna get a c5 z06...more mods with the same or less money. i was just wondering who's been brave enough to open pandora's box and how fast did you get?
Don't believe your speedo. Mine checked against GPS is 10 mph fast at 175mph. So get a GPS to see the real numbers. I will remember it for you so you can keep your eyes on the road. A closed road or course of course, never on a open road.

The C5Z is geared aggressively, so it redlines 5th gear at a lower RPM than less powerful cars like the base model C5. 6th gear is OD, so you won't accelerate much unless you add alot more power (like an LS7.)
In a open road race I was radared at 163. My speedo reads slow, and I took here up to my max speed allowed of 168. I have no mods and I am guessing by the rpm I would have made it to about 175ish.
They say that the C5s are aerodynamically limited to around 178 mph with stock HP. That's in 5th gear, because there is not enough HP to overcome wind resistance/drag with the gear ratio in 6th. Now, if you add significantly more HP, could you pull 6th gear? Maybe.
Now, would you want to go that fast? Not me. I've hit between 155 and 160 on the back straight at Pocono Raceway a couple of times. Things happen pretty quickly when you are moving that fast. I certainly would never want to go anywhere near that fast on the highway, it's just too dangerous. And the only way I would want to go faster would be someplace like the Bonneville salt flats or on one of those super-long airport runways where they do speed tests, where there is a lot of room for error and no one around to accidently pull in front of you and no pot holes, etc.
I ran 159.2 at the maxton mile... Standing mile run on a shorty tube header car at the time. Video is below ... you can see at the end I blip the throttle to keep it under 160... So I think without the granny shifts more aggressive starts or blip she may have done 163-4 in the mile.... but the sped def was slower to come past 150.
I hit 172 in 5th gear at 6500 RPM on the German Auto Bahn. That was with wife and a couple of hundred pounds of luggage. I got a picture of speedo at 162 but didn't get the 172 on film...
I've hit/bumped the rev limiter in 5th gear with the speedo showing 177 in my '01.
I know that my reading is a little fast, because when I turn my cruise control on at an indicated 70 mph, the read out on the display says "cruise set 72 mph."
So I'm guessing with that ratio and the speed in 5th gear, the GM claim of 171 is about right..
Car and Driver magazine ran 168 mph at the redline 6500 rpm in 5th gear on a 2002 z06. I'd say maybe 172mph if you want to bounce off the rev limiter at 6700 rpm
