From a high of well over $10 a gallon its now down to the equivalent of about $5.60. For once with the bad rate against the Euro it's cheaper than on the Continent.
I'd be able to drive the Vette again if the weather wasn't so bad
I happened across $1.92 for regular (89 octane - don't remember what the other grades were) here in NE Tennessee. Not bad compared to last summer.
To put things in perspective for all you young folks: Back in the late '50s when I first started to drive I can remember gas for $0.14 per gallon. In the '60s it was around $0.22 and in the '70s you couldn't get it for a while at any price. If you compare gas prices with other major items that have inflated, it's hanging right in there. A Corvette in the '60s could be had for $4000, today it's at least 10 times that. A new house in the '60s was around $20000, today it's at least 10 times that. My first starting salary out of college was $5000, the same occupation today is about 10 times that.
Enjoy the cheap gas while it lasts, it will go back up there by summer.
According to the forecast I get, the price per gallon could stay depressed until 2010 or 2011. The wild card is the impact of OPEC cuts (if they can actually turn off the spigot), and China. I'm watching offshore projects being put on hold due to financial issues ($60 per barrel or lower makes deepwater exploration uneconomical) and softening demand.
Now, China's consumption continues to rise. It's up to 20% from October '07 to October '08. They have the cash and need to continue expansion. That will hurt them down the line.
Yeah, you might get a seasonal bump next summer, but I'm guessing (stress guessing) the slump may last a bit.
