I guess if you use no clearcoat over you paint you will have a matte finish, I did see one hot rod on the tube done that way,(it was a bright blue 40 something street rod) but I have no Idea how you would clean the paint work without removing paint everytime you cleaned the car

there are some pics floating around on the forum of a flat / matte black C5... done very nicely...
I hear there are matte clearcoats out now that will preserve the look... not 100% sure though.

matte paint still needs a clear coat to protect it, just not a gloss clear coat. i personally am not a huge fan of the look, and feel that it has been getting played out a lot on cars trying to be "stealth".

that being said, i think it can still look kinda cool on some cars.

Default Project Gotham

Thanks for the props TORCH.. Heres my creation. And a true "matte black" Paint job has a CLEARCOAT on it. The difference is the coat is matte and not gloss. Sorry for the old pic. Will have some new ones ready before the end of the year

Default understanding what a clear coat is

A clear coat is paint without pigment! From polyurethane, epoxies to lacquers. There are as many clear coat choices as there are paint types. Clear coats need to be maintenanced the same as any auto paint.

A clear coat is NOT needed to protect a matte paint finish if you apply the matte as a top coat and not just a base color coat.

Not to step on your knowledgeable toes my friend but its NOT MATTE PAINT. This paint is actually Mercedez Black with a MATTE CLEARCOAT. The clearcoat alone is what give it the flat look not the paint. As you will see from pics I will post next week I have GLOSS Hash markings on my drivers side and the only difference is the Clear. Enough talking about paint. Just do what you feel and make it "yours".. Peace out peeps

That's fine but I was not refering to your specific car but to paint and clear coating general. Folks get the idea that clear coats are different from paint and they're not. That's all. Example is the matte black hood paint on my 1968 Plymouth Road Runner. It's factor acyrlic enamel , no clear coat. So as I mentioned one can get paint or clear coats in any type.

I have a question about the matte finish. How would I rub out small surface scratches without leaving a glossy area?

you dont. Thats the negative side of matte black. If you buff or polish a matte clear it will turn glossey.

One nice thing I noticed about the matte clear is that it seams alot more scratch resistant than glossy clear. It will still chip, but you can rub your fingers on it, or dry it with a crappy towel and it will be OK
