NO z06hellcat made a heck of a find! I heard the results myself in soonerfan51's 2000 coupe a couple of days ago! $3.00 bucks plus TAX,,,,just not Corvette tax!
If you use CAT5 wire for this mod, get the "stranded" wire type which is used in PC to wall connections. The solid wire versions used inside walls is much too fragile and the solid copper wires can easily break in use.
Also, if your not good at soldering......look for the 3M™ Scotchlok™ splice connectors used to splice data and phone cables.
These are very handy and "fool" proof. Just insert your wires and squeeze with pliers......waterproof as well. You can find small quanities at Home Depot and such.
I am pretty mechanically inclined too. For some reason it works intermittently and then fries the entire radio!!! I then have to uninstall the head unit and unplug the wires then plug them back in just for the radio to turn on. When I plug the 3.5 mm headphone jack back in.... BOOM there goes the radio. I am hoping that this may be from frying the jack, so I am going back to radioshack tomorrow and will be getting another jack in hopes of making this work.
If anyone has any ideas on what I might have done wrong please let me know! I thing that I fried the jack though while soldering, but we can only hope.

Do you have a cd changer? if so it can be much easier. However those jacks and small cat wire are VERY tempermental and can be damaged easily. It took me a few tries to get it right. I destroyed one jack and broke cat wire twice. Take your time.

There are two different types of cables from the CD player. One is stranded wire and connectors, the other is a ribbon cable. I have a ribbon cable coming from my cd player and another connector on the board that looks just like the ones in the picture, but that one goes to the radio board, not the cd player. I stupidly tried to use the 1st and 3rd wires on that connector and it would pop and bang when i inserted the connector. I think they carry power to the radio board. I probed the connector and found that it is the 4th and 5th wire on that connector and mine works with the radio instead of the cd player. This way i don't have to have a cd spinning all the time.

Hope this helps
That is exactly what I did after resplicing everything it works great
I found out that in my 99 FRC there is green wire that has a female end that goes to a mail end on the smaller circuit board that goes on top that I forgot to plug in and am pretty sure thats what made it not work Needless to say, I felt dumb...
But anyway it works now and thanks for the input I wish I would of had it earlier

Glad you got it to work. I posted in the LS1tech form a couple of days ago about the wires, but didn't realize that hellcat had started this thread.
Good luck with the radio.
What about us without the CD changer? I would love to do this, but not at the expense of my head unit.
Please explain how to do this for us without the changer.
The How to is in the write up in the first link Z06Hellcat posted inclding the part numbers and which wires you need to splice. If you have any questions just post up and we will answer them.
if ur cd player doesnt work this aint gonna help u then, u can tap the radio tuner side if u can find it i knwo its there
this is an easy mod for those comfortable with soldering just dont drop solder on the radio cause u will be SOL. done this tons of times for C5s as well as many other GMs

I can slip a cd that I don't like, and that it will read, so then I can play the ipod on it.
What kind of functionality with this hook up? Do you have to use your Ipod to control the songs or can you still do it with the radio controls? Other than possibly having to use the Ipod for playlists, etc., is there any other drawbacks to using this system? (Other than me possibly frying my GM radio)?

Since you just splicing into the radio outputs, you will likely have no iPod functions from the radio controls......you will have to make selections at the iPod.
