You can change the shift points and shift firmness between gears yourself with most hand held tuners that you plug into the computer port under your dash. I was given a free HyperTech tuner for my '98 that has 3 different shift firmness settings. I choose the middle one so the shifts didn't jar my teeth. You can change the cooling fans settings etc. too, plus it gives you a good seat of the pants increase in performance from about 3/4 throttle to WOT. You can buy these tuners used on some of the auction sites or in C5 Parts For Sale here on the CF. They can change other computer settings too, so read their website first. New...they run about $350-400, but used I've seen them sell for as little as $100. Look around for one, then you can adjust things anytime YOU want, instead of running to an expensive tuner for the same thing. I know the tuners can do more things for performance.............but first decide what are you really needing???

Good Luck..
Used them before, I would rather spend 300-400 on a good tune by someone that knows what they are doing, You get a lot more for your money. The Hand held tuners are ok,But limted.. But having a tune by an expert is well worth it...

When it's stop and go and it's hot out the acceleration is kind of mushy. When it's cold it's great. However I think mine needs a tune, sometimes when I floor it on the highway I get some nasty hesitation and downshifting.

This is one the reasons why a CAI (cold air intake) is so important on these cars. On the stock setup, the only air available to your engine is coming from the hot, underhood engine compartment. You can only imagine how hot it gets under there on a summer day. It gets hot, damn hot.
The heated intake air is less dense than cooler air, so you have less power available from the hot air. Additionally, your car's computer senses the intake air temp and will retard more and more timing (up to 12* or so) as the air gets hotter, and retarded timing means less power.
