A buddy did mine (pentavolvo on this site) He ran all new wiring from the new head unit to the amp and speakers. We went with a single 4 channel Alpine amp with one 12" Elemental Designs subwoofer and 2 Elemental Designs component speakers in the doors. The rear speakers were completely eliminated. The whole setup cost me about $1200 including his time to install. It sounds 1000 times better than stock.
Thanks. I agree about the stock rear speakers, especially in my Verte. On the stock head unit, I faded the sound to the back speakers only and they sounded horrible. Add some open-air wind conditions and I would agree that they are completely worthless.
So what makes the stereo a Blows, anyway? I have the same POS head unit in my beater 97 pickup. Sounds about the same, and has the SCV ring too. The speakers are nothing to brag about. As far as I can tell, it's just another GM marketing gag. It's ok by me, I gotta pay attention to the velocity and don't need a distraction:http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...s/biggrin5.gif
I find that the Bose in my C5 has nowhere near the sound quality of my '94 C4 Bose. As far as SCV, it works well in the C5, not for crap on the C4. But, the C5 is much better since I dumped the Corsa Pace car cat back for Z06Tis. Noise was so bad after the engine mods and headers went on, the SCV couldn't keep up, based on speed. I liked the post about the replacement system that eliminated the rear speakers. I must agree that the rear set is weak. Worth consideration as an alternative, assuming I'll spend any $ on non go fast stuff.
I just realized this, but every car I've had recently had bose radios... and the quality has ranged from horrible to acceptable. My Z06 has the worst Bose equipment I've ever heard; my Ranger has the best sounding Bose system (which means I can listen without wanting to plug my ears); my last two Miatas had Bose units also and they were in-between.
My project next winter is to completely gut the car audio from the Vette and start from the ground-up.
I always liked the SCV but my after market Pioneer system doesn't have it
Have to say, for the price GM will have paid Bose to produce the stock units I guess its no surprise that it's not a state of the art system. Its obviously one of the areas that GM shaved costs to keep the price down on this great car.
