Default Most Unique Feature - Bose

One of the most unique features in the C5 is the SCV feature on the stereo system. I know most don't think much of the Bose unit but to have the volume go up and down according to interior noise level is a great feature. I have owned more expensive cars without that feature and am constantly turning down the radio when I come to a stop. Does this work by speed or sound? What do you think? Do you have it in any other cars?

I can't hear the stereo in my Z06 to save my life (yes I like it that way). Maybe I should remove the head unit completely and install a twizzlers dispenser.

Based on my observations, I think it goes by speed.

I can detect a pronounced volume change every time I change speed by 10 mph... at 40, 50, 60, etc. there is an abrupt change. I do like that I can manually change the amount of compensation it provides. At maximum, it gets too loud too fast, so I keep mine one notch down and it seems just right. It's just too bad the sound system itself isn't the best... but that's an upgrade for next year.

Yes... the outside plastic ring around your volume **** (this ring has a tab on it) controls this feature. turn it all the way off (counterclockwise) and it will be disabled. When it's on, I think there are three levels of compensation it provides. So the **** has 4 positions it can be in... Off, and then the three set positions.

My Mazda3 did it by speed, I would assume its the same in the vette. Many low end cars now come stock with this feature now too.

It is based on speed, following is from the owner's manual:

SCV: Your system has a feature called
Speed-Compensated-Volume (SCV). With SCV, your
audio system adjusts automatically to make up for road
and wind noise as you drive. Set the volume at the
desired level. Move the control ring behind the upper
**** to the right to adjust the SCV. Then, as you drive,
SCV automatically increases the volume, as necessary,
to overcome noise at any particular speed. The volume
level should always sound the same to you as you drive.
If you don’t want to use SCV, turn the control all the
way down. Each notch on the control ring allows for
more volume compensation at faster vehicle speeds.

totally, I think that the stock Bose system is a POS. There is a saying "No highs, no lows...it must be a Bose" which is totally correct.

I do think that for the original sticker price of the Vette they really should have put in a "decent" sound system. I have a convertible and love driving on the freeway with the roof down, but the sound when the roof is down and you're doing 70mph is TERRIBLE. I will be installing a decent sound system when I get some "spare" money but in the meantime I'll just have to live with it !

I think it works off of the speed. I have the same one in my truck also.

I'm about to upgrade my head unit to a DD NAV/MP3 system. Instead of the Bose harness needed to work the stock factory system/speakers, is it easier to bypass the harness and just install new/better speakers? Is it that simple or is other electronics modifications required?

A buddy did mine (pentavolvo on this site) He ran all new wiring from the new head unit to the amp and speakers. We went with a single 4 channel Alpine amp with one 12" Elemental Designs subwoofer and 2 Elemental Designs component speakers in the doors. The rear speakers were completely eliminated. The whole setup cost me about $1200 including his time to install. It sounds 1000 times better than stock.
