Default LS1 Distributor

I have a 96 LT1 w/opti spark-I'm looking to buy 2002 w/LS1-What did GM do in the LS1 to get away from the opti-May be a dumb question to most-but I've found no answers in my searches-Thanks

The LS1 has no distributor, it has 8 coils, one located above each spark plug. The spark plug wires are only a few inches long. The computer fires the coils in the correct sequence.

I have a 94 Camaro that has an optispark distributor. I've never had a problem with it, although I've heard plenty of nightmare stories from other people. I did take it off and inspect it when I replaced the water pump, cleaned it up and it looked good. The idea is good, the placement is not so bright right behind a water pump and prone to moisture.
