I lost my only key to my 2001 vette, can a regular locksmith make a key from the vin. # or do I have to go back to the STEALERSHIP? Thanks for any info.
You need a key cut which has a correct resistor pellet fitted. Either measure the resistance on your current key and then get one cut with the right setting. Maybe easier (but more $$) to go to a dealer and have him get the correct key for you.
Here are the values if you go DIY
VATS key codes:
The BCM measures the resistance value of the resistance of the pellet and allows the fuel system to operate. If it is within +/-10% the car will start.
To check your key value:
Set your digital volt meter to “ohms mode” and measure the value across the pellet.
I got the dealership to run my vin and tell me what the vats code was. I then found a few places on-line that sell key blanks for about $12-$15. I had my key cut at a local hardware store and have used it ever since with no problems. Dealership didn't charge me anything to get the code.

Once you have the VATS code, a locksmith should be able to make a key for you.
