Default Uh Oh, Check Engine Light Came On!

Driving the '97 to work and the check engine light came on for the first time. Had the car for about 6 weeks now, all the gauges read normal, no tell-tail sounds, drives fine. Had tune-up performed when first acquired, mechanic says everything's in good working order. Should I worry?

Thanks, Norm

Take it to Auto Zone or Advanced Auto Parts, they will read the code for free and tell you what is wrong with it.

Have you disconnected the battery for like 30 minutes, then driving for i think its 20 miles or more should keep it off...you might want to check out the thread where you can run the diagnositic menu...i think you hold down options and press fuel four times within ten seconds, then it will go through all the codes. Make note of all the codes (if any), then the reset button will remove the codes, but keep in mind that the underlying problem(s) will still be there. Pressing e/m will take you out of the menu completely...look for the thread it will help.

Its a '97. Possibility of a bad O2 sensor or cats going out...

Post up the codes here and we can troubleshoot. The link at post #2 shows how. It could be anything and you wont know until you pull the codes. There are more experts here than you could possibly wish for.

Not sure Autozone has the same pedigree

Why would someone suggest autozone when you can read the codes out yourself on the DIC?

This is what I found: question mark denotes "I don't have a clue".

P 1416 H AIR System Bank 2---?
P 1571 H ASR Desired Torque---?
C 1226 H LF Excessive Wheel Speed Variation---?
B 2272 H Left Mirror Motor Fault---aware of that.
U 1255 H Generic Lost Communications---?
U 1096 H Loss of Communications with IPC---?
U 1064 H Loss of Communications with BCM---?
U 1016 H Loss of Communications with PCM---?
C 2100 H C Left Front TPM Sensor Malfunction---aware of that.
C 2110 H C Right rear TPM Sensor Malfunction---aware of that.

And that's all that was displayed.

So, is this thing going to blow up?

The ones labeled with "C's" are whats currently going on with your car. Everything else seems minor. The "C 1226 H LF Excessive Wheel Speed Variation" I believe, is speed sensor located in the steering shaft that needs to be replaced. Contact Gene Culley for the part. For your year the part is rather expensive. Since you said it's your first time, I would pull up the codes again and after it finishes the diagnostics press "reset" The check engine light will disappear. Drive it for a while and see if the Check engine comes up again. If it does, the wheel speed sensor needs to be replaced.

Thanks for the info. For the thick headed here, what would cause "excessive wheel speed variation"? I'm just doing normal driving, no race tracks, no riding up on curbs, pretty much all four wheels are going the same pace. I realize the physics on making turns and such so what would set that warning off?

Our cars unfortunately are getting older. Sensors will began to malfunction. That sensor thinks you're trying to make a U-turn right, that's way it's tripping the light. Aside from all that, it seems your baby is just fine. I'm thick headed too brother...I still have money in my 401k plan.
