Default mesh grill installation question-which silicone?

just got some mesh grills for the vette. I am planning on using silicone instead of the double sided tape. is there a 'special' silicone to use or will the GE silicone II I bought at home depot work?
thanks!!

If you want to use something that is easily removable, RTV silicone, like instant gasket-type formula may work. You can always try the GE silicone; it may be okay. Another option that might be okay is 3M gasket adhesive. 2-part epoxy will definitely bond well, but will be tough to remove should the need arise.

thanks for the replies guys. I thought that all of the install threads said to use silicone-apparently I don't research too well.

is there a brand of 2 part epoxy you suggest? remember I have to buy this stuff in Canaduh and sometimes I can't get the same products as you can. Is there a specific type of 2 part epoxy you suggest?

thanks

edit: I'd rather this be hard to remove than have to worry about it coming lose!

Use the silicone, it won't come loose. If you use epoxy it won't ever come off easy if you need to do repair or paint work.

epoxy would scare me...

would hold too tight and take paint off if removed (maybe). I have read some use velcro but I just peeled the double sided tape and applied. No biggie...

My side coves came with the double sided sticky tape. They have been on for 5 years with no problems, however I like the idea they would not be too difficult to remove if I had to.

silicone....I applied the silicone and then I took a paperclip and hooked one end in the mesh and taped the other side to the car until it dried( I applied some painters tape to the car first to make sure no scratches) worked like a charm...no issues over a year later

Just a thought here - using heavy duty velcro is not a bad option. If you have fog lights, you would be able to easily remove the screens to clean them. I used velcro on mine - had them on for well over 5 years and never had a problem with them coming loose or falling out.

thanks again for the replies. I should have been more clear with my question. I am talking about using silicone on all the screens except the fog light covers (z06 screens). I did use velcro on the fog/z06 screens and hit worked like a hot dang!

another question. did you guys have to do a lot of fitting and bending on the rear screens? mine don't seem to sit too flush. it's not like these are really expensive pieces so some fitting is understandable.

My rear screens fit straight out of the box. I had to shape the gills screens though.

Like you I used velcro for the fog screens. I used the 3M tape initially but I ended up using glue. I may try epoxy when I refit them as the gill screens are starting to come loose.

Use the silicone. I used clear on mine and it worked great.

Dry fit the screen first and shape if necessary. Then apply the silicone and use a bungee cord hooked to the screen and wrapped around you mirror to hold in place until the silicone sets up. You don't need a lot of pressure so use the appropriate length cord. if your bungee end won't fit in the screen then use a paper clip or string and then hook the end of the bungee to that.

How well would the silicone hold up if used up front at high speed. Im wondering about the brake duct screens since i have my brake ducts removed.

thanks for all the replies again!! I put the side coves in with a chit load of silicone and used rubber bands to secure them. I had to leave them on for my short commute this morning as I didn't get it done until close to 10pm last night:o kinda ghetto but the should be very secure
I am going to use the same method for the rear and hope it works.

once its done I'll post up some pics.
