2000 vette, manual, service column lock on but not locked out yet. Has been to local GM dealer 4 times in 7,000mi for same problem. What is best fix?????
The CLB will resolve the problem PROVIDED the battery is good as mentioned above. Have the battery checked FIRST. If it is good then order the CLB. If it is NOT good replace it THEN order the CLB so you won't have a further issue.
All of the above, your battery must be marginal. Low voltage on the PCM buss will cause this.
Several places sell the column lock bypass module, under $50. Corvette's of Houston comes to mind.
Go to http://www.ls1howto.com and scroll down about halfway in the page look on the right for "5)C5 Column Lock Bypass Install." Excellent documentation.
Yes, if it's been to GM dealer 4 times already, you have proven what most of us already know-even GM doesn't know how to prevent it. A club member spent $800 last week after getting towed in, and a new battery was on his bill-he says he could have saved about $740 if he would have replaced the battery first, but the local GM dealer replaced it the fifth day it was in the shop, and it was fixed. Needless to say, that particular dealer isn't exactly at the top of anyone's list in our area!
Mine had 2 recall fixes AND a good battery. The GM "K harness" shot craps and stranded me anyhow. Slapped in a CLB and have been trouble free ever since!!!
i bought my column lock bypass at corvettes of houston last week it was about 50 bucks or so and installed it myself took me 30 min and thats only because i didnt have the star key. thats your best solution right there. If you dont do this its only a matter of time b4 u get stranded somewhere trust me ive seen it happen to way to many people!!!!!!
I bought the column lock bypass and installed it about six months ago on my 99 M6. All was well for a while until the other night. I only drive the car about once a month (the battery is good it is on a tender). I went to open the unlocked door and the factory alarm started going off. When I got in and put the key in the ignition, I got the dreaded pull key wait ten seconds message. It has been doing this every time I have started the car since the alarm went off. So far it hasn't left me sitting but I know it's coming. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on what it may be please let me know. I am getting ready to take the car on a 1,000 mile road trip and I would feel much better with everything working before I take off. My email address is bbut2@osceola.org
Sounds like two different problems, just happening at the same time.
The CLB module may have failed and needs to be replaced.
Pull back the accordion weather protector between the door and hinge and examine the wires for chaffing. You may have a problem there causing the alarm to set. There is a current active post about this one with links to picture disassembly.
This happened to me. Mine had been in for the recall and still locked last year. GM wouldn't cover it. I now have the CLB.
I had it happen to me yesterday. It stayed locked for about 12 hours, now it's working fine. 4 days ago I let the cars battery run all the way down due to leaving the hazard switch in the on position on accident. My multi switch for the turn signals have gone out also, and turning the hazards on and off sometimes gets them working again. Well I left it in the on position on accident since nothing happened when i pushed it in a fury about 21 times (had to be an odd number to end up on). I also took my gps in the airplane 2 days later and left it in the car plugged in, the car started fine but I'm wondering if it was charging more than normal while the car was off.
ok so those could be the 2 problems that caused it to happen, but I called GM they wanted 85 dollars just to scan the car, etc. I called another GM place and they said that my car had already been taken care of per recall 2006: 04006 .
SOOOOOOO I guess i'm going to suggest to everyone to simply get the box and do it yourself. mines in the mail to prevent this **** from happening again.
Anyone ever notice that if someones car brakes down it sucks, but when a corvette breaks down everyones like, OH SNAP!
Hope this helps
Just stranded me this weekend for 3 hours. I got pass the lock plate one time and the code cleared when I jerked the wheel to the left right when I cut the car on. Funny thing is that the tow guy told me to try that first....and I was shaking the wheel, mad, at the wrong time for hours. Dropped my car off at the dealership. Everything runs fine now. Picking up the CLB tomorrow from Zip tomorrow. What a pain.

I just developed the same problem after my battery was died from lack of use this winter. I jumped it and now I have the service coumn lock message on. The battery is about 2 yrs old so I guess from reading these posts that it is a common problem and is probably related to the dead battery.
Its due for an oil change so I will let the techs figure it out!
People, read the recall notice. The first page tells you what causes the problem.
Low voltage on the PCM bus and/or quick starts.
It's plain and simple and we have detailed this issue over and over.
If you don't have a bypass module and you have a MN6 or a 97-00 A4, it will happen to you. Eventually your battery will fail. It may not happen right away after the battery is replaced, it may take a week or so for it to show its ugly head.
But it will happen to you.
GM has already exhausted their limited resources on the issue and gave up! A year ago they ceased covering the recall issue. Therefore it is up to you to be informed and to take precautionary action to install a bypass module.
