Default Need help cf!!!

ok I really need some help. Some may know that I have been having problems with hard steering on my C5 and Ive come to my witts end!!! I have gotten many thoughts and opinions on this subject but have no results as of yet. Im reaching out for help for any member in the southern Cali area that is willing to give me a hand and help me solve this problem. The car is becoming unsafe to drive because when the steering acts up it has a really bad break steer to the right and can sometimes become very hard to control. With this beeing my DD im in desperate need of a solution!!! Thanks CF

Have you pulled the codes yet? I'm wondering if something is wrong with a wheel speed sensor or other. Is your traction warning light turned on, in the IP Cluster?

C1281 Steering Sensor Uncorrelated Malfunction
C1286 Steering Sensor Bias Malfunction

Looks like your steering wheel position sensor is done. Its certainly possible that its inducing a problem with the active handling system although I would think the light would be on.

Default Power Steering?

Are you talking about the power steering not working? If so here is some strange info from my experience. I did a cam swap and when I put everything back together I apparently put too much power steering fluid in and it made it stop working. I drained it and refilled it and it works fine, before I drained it I checked the level and it didnt look like it had hardly any over the full line. This may not be related but it is a cheap thing to try. It has been almost a year and I havent had a problem since.

I agree with dgrant that its probably the SWPS with those codes but its surprising you're not getting an AH trip.

The steering wheel position sensor monitors the wheel position and feeds an input into the Active Handling system. If it starts to go bad it feeds in a false voltage and can cause some movement on the column that you can feel.

I have a bad sensor and it keeps tripping the system. I have a new one waiting to be fitted when I have time

I though some GM's have some kind of magnetic device around the steering column that changes the feel of the wheel at different speeds. Sounds like it could be the issue with the codes your getting.

Yes some have active handeling but unless this is a problem being caused by those codes messing with my active handeling then it's got to be something else.

Any GM Techs out their want to put their thoughts in here?

I'm also with dgrant and Dave. I think your SWPS is faulty and causing your AH to think you are in a skid w/the front wheels turned at speed, and therefore applying individual brakes to correct the "skid". You mentioned "break steer", I'll bet it's "brake" steer caused by the above. Applying a single front brake at highway speeds can be unsafe, as you have learned. Dave, good link on changing the SWPS.
Good luck!

Thanks guys I will take a look at the link and try and troubleshoot the SWPS and see if I can fix this problem. Also looked at the fluid level an it was slightly overfilled so I scooped out the extra and I'm going to give it some miles to see if maybe by some chance that was it.

Well I'd rather start with that and maybe end up saving $$$ then take it to a stealership and pay mega bucks for nothing

You said you are constantly throwing codes that are showing a steering sensor is not working properly. I think its in your best interest to have this looked at either way.
