Default Trans Problems Please help

Alright so here is the rundown, I was racing my friends Murcielgo (spell check) and as I hit third gear it made a grinding noise, still went into gear and came out no problem for the fourth gear shift. After the race third gear now grinds very badly unless I double clutch the shift and match the rpms. What do you guys think would be causing this? All other shifts and gears are fine and I have a C6 Z06 shifter installed. Do you think it is a syncro?maybe the fluid being low? or possibly the shifter alignment being off? or something in the linkage? I am not very familiar with the trans setup on the vettes as this is my first one, so any ideas or help would be great.

I was in second at about 4,000 rpms and he was still in first since the gearing is crazy in that car, he took the hit and through fourth I was about 3 cars back, I make 390/380.

Now any advice with the trans?

It could also be a bent shift fork. Any way you look at it you are into a tranny rebuild. There are several forum vendors that have HD forks and syncros as replacement items. Common costly problem.

Definitely broken synchro key or keys. These trannies are very unforgiving for bad shifts. You will eventually be stuck in gear if you continue to drive it. Upgrade to billet keys, steel 3-4 fork, bronze pads etc. when you get it rebuilt.

Have the shop save a coulple of the OEM stamped keys for you, and you will be amazed that GM would have put something so fragile looking in a "factory race car." They look like a part that belongs in a child's Tonka toy.

I found this site to be helpful in locating the parts for a decent price.

I just went through the same thing. It was syncros. I had after market warranty. Dealer put in new trans and it cost me 200 bucks. New trans didn't make it 250 miles and had syncro issues again. This time it was on GM. They opened it up and said it was a mess. I drove about 30 miles last night and it does not seem right still. Clutch has maybe 1500 miles on it. Seems to be realeasing fine. I am thinking maybe the pilot berring is not spinning free enough to let the syncros slow down the clutch disc. Good luck.

I have an 02 and mine didn't have the billet keys in it. I think that was 03 that they started doing that. I do know mine didn't have them though.
