Default Tire pressure sensors

I have a 2000 convertible that I bought two years ago. Every since the day I bought it the tire sensor display comes on when I start the car. I was told by the dealership that sold me the car that all I needed was a magnet to reprogram the sensors but he didnt have one. Me and a couple of buddys tried with no success. How do I know if i have the proper wheels with the proper sensors and not newer wheels with sensors not compatible with my cars computer.

It is true that you will need a magent to reprogram the sensors and you can find this at a local harware store. A small magnet that will fit in between the spokes. Search this forum on how to reprogram. Its not difficult at all but can be frustrating. I did it and it was not so bad. If you really want to know if you have the right sensors you will have to separate the tires and wheels and look at the sensors. A tire shop can do this but you may have opened up another can of worms. What I mean by this is that do not go to any old tire shop. If you have wheels that you do not want marked go to a reputable tire shop, perferrably one that has worked on corvettes. Take you time and be confident with who is touching your car.

Just buy a small magnet in Home Depot and follow the Vette programming procedure EXACTLY..If that does not work you may need to buy and install new sensors. ( Very expensive $$$$$$$$) Early model sensors are $170 bucks each plus installation...later model sensors are cheaper.

I suspect the dealer was full of chit, but be that as it may. The first thing I would try to figure is if it is just one sensor acting up, or all of them. What do the messages say, and have you pulled the diagnostic codes (you cn do that without any special tools)? I would suspect you have 1 sensor that has gone bad - they do have batteries in them that wear out.

On a 2000 I'm guessing the sensors batteries are shot. They are only good for about 7 years.

I would try to program 1st then if that fails either buy rebuilts with new batteries or new sensors.

Will the cheaper 01 and up sensors work on a 2000? I have a feeling I know the answer

Corvettedon rebuilds them (new batteries) if he's not deployed anymore. Look him up. Had the same prob on my 97. Vegas is right about the batt life as well. Service all of them. If one fails-the others are only months behind it.

Buy from Gene Culley www.GMPartsHouse.com/

See his thread also –

P.S. A strong magnet from an old speaker works VERY well.

if you are adventurous (and a bit handy) i seem to remember reading a post not too long ago from someone who took his sensors apart and replaced the batteries himself for something like a total coat of $30.00. it's probably not for the faint of heart, but ti really didn't sound like it was brain surgery either. might be worth trying to search for the thread. sorry i just don't remember who posted it exactly.
