I 've read many threads about the sulfur build up on the fuel level sensor that gives false fuel level readings. Some have had luck correcting this by using Techron or Sea Foam. I read an article in Corvette Fever and they recommended using Fuel System Treatment Plus from a chevy dealer. Not having this problem with my 99, YET , but wondering if they are all the same. Or is the GM stuff better. Has anyone tried the GM treatment.
Not sure about that cleaner but if the cleaner is formulated to treat sulfur it would work. I'd guess that most are. Techron is proven to fix the problem and worked for most members. Best solution is just to run a pre-emptive bottle through the system every now and then. Even if you do hit problems, treat it as soon as you see it and it should clean the sensor.
In my case I had the gauge show 3/4 and creep up to full just after I'd filled up. Two bottles of Techron fixed it but I used it straight away. That was well over 2 years ago and its still running fine.
I've tried the GM stuff. Not cheap. Didn't work. But like others, I have been using Chevron since I bought the car and adding some extra Techron once in a while and now it seems to be working fine. At least it did the last time I filled up. Took a while to get it going again. Mine wasn't really bad but would stay about 1/2 tank for maybe 10 minutes and then it would gradually go to full like it was supposed to and work fine after that.
OK, thanks for the replies. I don't have a Chevron near me, do have a Shell and BP, both claim to have additives to clean the fuel system. So far, my 99 is working OK. I do put in a large can, 20oz. I think , once in a while. Wonder if it or Sea Foam would be better when added to let the car sit for a couple of days to help clean the fuel lever sensor arm.
run car until tank(s) are about half full.
Add techron or seafoam
Let sit at least over night.
Get fill up, drive,,,
repeat at least once more a week later.
I run Texaco and Chevron exclusively since I started having problems. I carry a couple of bottles of Techron and dump them in at odd intervals. SInce I've started doing this, I've never had a problem...
