When accelerating through the first 3 gears during normal driving, I can hear a whine coming from the engine. It's not extremely loud, but it's noticeable. Normal? Could it be the alternator? Car runs good...
Well I was going to post a new topic about this same problem that I happen to be having, but someone beat me to it! I wonder if it's the same "whine" sound that I'm hearing. It only happens for me after the car is warmed up, so that's an interesting clue. I can rev the engine before its warmed up (yes I know.. not good, but I don't do it often), and it sounds just fine. But after the engine is up to normal temps, I can rev in neutral up to about 4500 to 5000 rpm, and I don't hear anything unusual. But after that, this high pitch whine starts happening (around 1500 to 2000 hz I'm thinking). If I rev quickly up to that mark, the whine happens closer to 4500rpm and has a deeper sound at first.
I've tried recording the sound with an external mic around different points in the car. I thought for sure the sound was coming from the engine bay, but having the mic INSIDE the engine area with the hood closed yielded no recording of the sound. I didn't try putting the mic at the exhaust. When I get around to it, I'll make some audio clips that I can post on here.
It's a peculiar sound, and I've never heard it from any other vettes. What's odd is the sound just COMES on.. it doesn't come on gradually as I approach those higher rpm's. Also, it makes this sound whether the clutch is engaged or disengaged, so I don't think it's in the drivetrain. Any thoughts??
It's pretty much the same pitch from the time it starts all the way up to redline, although it fizzles out around redline. When revving quickly, and the revs come back down, the pitch drops just a bit. It's a continuous tone though--it doesn't flutter or modulate in any way. Also, it's done this pretty much for as long as I've had the car (2 1/2 years).
Here's a video I put together that demonstrates this sound. Anyone else ever heard this?? I don't know how to embed youtube video on here, but here's the link:

Wow, that's a very high pitched whine. Mine is not that noticeable and is constant throughout the RPM band. I think the whine I'm hearing is normal intake noise.
You said it is only once the car is warmed up. Does it make this sound when the car is stationary or only in motion (assuming your car is already warmed up in both cases)?
My 02 z06 starting doing this at 4k all the way to redline, worst when warm. It turned out to be the alternator. I pulled the belt after letting the car warm up. I reved the motor quickly and then shut it down so it wouldn't overheat. Noise was gone. I turned the pulley on the alternator by hand and I could feel a slight resistance in one spot. Changed the alternator and all is well again.
Hey, alternator sounds like a plausible cause for my issue! My first thought when I noticed the sound was a bearing going out somewhere. And yes it'll make the noise where the car is moving or stationary. But it sounds just fine until it's up to operating temps. Now with the alternator in mind, I can either pull the belt and test it momentarily (so it doesn't overheat of course), or I can put a mic right on the alternator and see what sound I get. The obvious thing to try would be have someone ELSE rev it while I move around and see where the noise is coming from. Here I go and make a video using an HD TV camera and post a clip on youtube... before I get someone to rev it while I listen. lol oh well.
I haven't figured this sound out yet. Anyone have any more suggestions yet? I took off the belt, and the alternator spun just fine twisting it by hand. I'll keep investigating. How come I always have issues that are RARE?! haha
