Not trying to hijack here but how the heck have you gotten to drive over 3000 vettes and over 500 C5s? (and moving them around parking lots or service stations doesn't count).
Here's a thread you might enjoy, post #11.
Me test driving a $250,000 '67 427/435. One of only 6 painted black with that engine option. I think in the post I mention to skip to 6:13 on the vid. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-g...-the-best.html
A lot of great feedback. the 76 is a manual and his truck is an auto. No concerns on the driving of a manual but we are heading back to Minneapolis next year and the traffic is a concern. But concerned that there is a performance difference between the two.
WOW,,not a lot of stick cars in 76!! I can tell you that a 6speed will idle along quite nicely in 1st gear!! For enthusiastic driving,,the M6 defiantly gets the nod!!There is a slight advantage to all out performance as well,,BUT the A4 does have an advantage of consistency on the drag strip. M6 gets better gas mileage as well.Just throwing these tid bits out there for consideration as well. My 2000 FRC can get low 20's in the city(does take some self restraint),,can get around 30 on the highway. YET, I've also turned a 13.08 @110.23 in the 1/4 mile!! Like having your cake and eating it too!!
I'm not even going to bother to read the posts as this is like asking which wax to use ( I use Zaino)!
I love my mn6, get what you want.
Every day traffic = auto.
Everything else = fun = mn6.
I say defintly chocolate. Ice cream just isnt ice cream, unless its chocolate.
I've even heard of some poor souls who actually buy vanilla, and put chocolate syrup on it. I mean come on ! If you wanted that you should just sell the subdae you have and get a chocolate one. Only way to go, no question.
A tune wakes the automatic up, but there's no reason to get a tune unless you do an intake, exhaust and headers so.....
As the others have stated it's personal preference, there's been times I wished mine was a manual but then there's been times i'm glad it's an automatic...
I like my 6-speed because I think I pay more attention to my driving. I only put about 1,000 miles a year on my car, so that also enters into the equation. I've got lots of seat time in manuals and A4's and I have to admit that it's nice getting into a car and not having to think about shifting. Either way you can't go wrong. Good luck!
Do your self and your husband a favor and get the 6 speed. There is nothing wrong with the A4's but to me it kills the car. Sure I'll admit, it's a PITA when you're stuck bumper to bumper on the highway but the fun of going through the gears and the overall control of the car far outweighs the issue of traffic. I'm sorry I just can't see the point in owning a sports car of this stature with an automatic trans. But to each his/her own, the best thing for you guys to do is go drive both! Have fun and good luck!
My C4's were a much stiffer clutch and did get a little tiring in traffice...but the C5 is no problem. And I even have a C6 Z06 clutch in mine...
Frankly - I don't think it comes down to pros and cons...MN6 vs A4. I think it comes down to preference.
Personally - I have the MN6 in both of my C5's and sought them out that way. It's what I wanted and didn't want the A4. Nothing wrong with the A4, it just wasn't what I wanted. Good luck in your search!
Drive train noises can be annoying with man tranny though... The shifter is very notchy and lacks any refinement at all... The lockout has to be dealt with immediately...

Either one makes for a great car. If you have to deal with a lot of heavy stop and go traffic, the auto might be the way to go. If you just like shifting gears without the tranny making the decision, go with the manual. The manual will get better gas mileage and has a better rear end gear ratio.
A manual does not make it MORE of a Sports Car then A4
I think that's apples and oranges -- I believe your examples are not slushboxes like the A4, but dual-clutch or electronic-clutch manuals with paddle shifters. Derived from F1 technology and very sporty. As direct as a stick if you control them manually but much quicker due to electronic clutch controls. They can run auto when you wish due to very expensive computer logic. Here's a link to describe at least how Ferrari's and some Maseratis work: http://www.autozine.org/technical_sc...ear_manual.htm

However they are still technically autos.
I think it is narrow minded thinking saying that "not a sports car without a manual"
The same as if I were to say it's not a sports car if you can't take the roof off? Although I doubt many would not think the ZO6 is a sports car.
The one and only answer is and always will be drive them both and see which one works best for you.

There's nothing like stirring the gears yourself, upshifting, and winding it out each gear, downshifting, coming into a turn, and if you want to baby it, you can get 33,34 mpg!!
Personally I don't understand why people buy a sports car in an auto...analogous to a motorcycle with an automatic....
Don't we buy a sports car for the driving experience?
But that doesn't mean I don't respect their decision.
My wife on the other hand was pushing for the auto. But it was my purchase and I think you loose all the best parts of the driving experience with an auto.
Me I love the option of short shifting the car for fuel mileage if I want, tearing it up at red line when I want, etc. Basically I am a control freak...

My husband is now searching for a C5 to go along with my 1976. The issue he keeps bringing up is whether to get an automatic or a manual. Where we live there are very few vets around to test drive (Grand Forks ND). Can people provide any pros and cons to each if they have had the opportunity to drive both? Thanks for helping to clear this issue up for us.
I just spent the last 2 1/2 months of my free time researching about 4,000 Vettes from just about every major website. The selection is absolutely astounding. It is also like going to the county fair. In other words, do your homework because you are going to see some you ain't never seen before. In general, if the deal is too good to be true, it is probably a scam. They are rampant. However I make a list of the 16 or so options that I required. It started from most important to least important. The first being price, then miles, then transmission, and so on. Once I had a good list to work from it was only a matter of time before patterns began emerging. Fortunately patience, persistence and hard work paid off in spades. I ended up with a gem from Atlanta. I had already accepted the fact that my high end price I was willing to go would limit me to a 2000 or 2001 mid-mileage nice Vette. But lo and behold, up jumps this 2003 Quicksilver Metallic six speed with not one but literally 'all' of the options I was looking for and to beat all, it was in my price range. Then it scared me. Why was this nice a Vette in my price range. So I began looking for every reason to find fault in the car and there was only normal wear and tear from a six year old, lady driven jewel. I called an old bud of mine and had him go look at the car and he said if I did not buy it, he would. That was all of three weeks ago and now here I set with my dream car and more. It is a one owner. This couple bought the car new. My body man confirmed it is all original body panels. He could find no damage serious damage or suspicion of repaided damage anywhere on the car. I am one lucky son of a gun. But it just goes to show the importance of making all decisions 'before' looking. So to answer the question of six speed versus manual. Personal preference and personal satisfaction. Nothing else matters. Although please hear me, make the decision 'before' seriously looking else regrets will surely follow.

So women can drive them? Being barefoot or wearing high heels should not be a problem then... As sucky as the MT is in the vette, still the best way to go IMO. Even a caveman can drive an automatic. Let us leave the paddle shifters to F1 where superfast reaction time is needed GM seems to be flip flopping about AT vs. MT too... On C5, MT was an extra option, on C6 it is the other way around. And C6 was suppose to be aimed at female drivers. Go figure I guess...
