Default z06 common issues

I am adding a new vette to my collection, an 01 z06, I was hoping the other z06 owners on here could tell me of the common problems encountered with the car, and of course the fixes, thanks guys

Very prone to speeding tickets. No known fix.

I am a cdl holder, can't be having any of that, there is a dragstrip nearby, hopefully that cures the lead foot woes

The Z06 is a very solidly built Corvette. The engines, if properly taken care of, should last for many trouble-free miles. The drive train on these models are built especially for agressive driving and again, if serviced regularly and taken care of, should not need serious service for a long time. Of course, much depends on how the Z is used, ie; excessive drag racing and other competitive driving will have an impact on anything that mechanical components that will eventually fail. However, it has been my experience that "spirited driving" on an occasional basis while adhering to a strict mainenance schedule should not shorten the life of the car in any appreciable way.

Congratualtions on your purchase and good luck with your new car!

The '01 Z06 had some oil burning issues due to rings. You should be able to find plenty to read with search or search this forum (in the red banner) in C5 Tech. I'd try using keywords "01 z06 oil burning" or similar. Here's one...

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-z...-question.html

The previous owner(s) may have already addressed the issue through GM though.

Be sure to read the sticky topics on the top of each C5 forum for more information. I always learn something new from this one...

Don't be Mislead by people saying all 01 Z06 burn oil. There are more 01 Z06 that don't have problems than one's with Problems. My 2001 Z06 does not burn any Oil.

Well, let's see...

column lock problems... get the column lock bypass.
I installed the bypass before I could experience this one.

window lifts - there's a thread on how to fix.

some experience the clutch pedal sticking to the floor
on high rpm shifts (I haven't had that yet) - fix is to
keep the fluid clean.

trunk lid not popping up enough, especially in cold weather -
there are several fixes that usually involve some sort of spring.
Mine does this occasionally, but I still manage to open it so
I haven't fixed it yet.

I'm sure others can add to this list...

If I have one complaint, it is the propensity for rock-chips in the paint. I wish I had gotten something protective installed from day one...

No issues with my '01 with the exception of slight increase in oil usage. Gas gage use to drop off to zero but ever since I started using Stabil during winter storage and Chevron gas its been working fine. The column lock issue was fixed under warrantry before I had any problems. Otherwise been a great car.

Good thing youre not asking about 02's...

Noisy *** sumbitches. Always something tinking, clinking, whining, vibrating, rattling- you name it.

The valve trains are crap. You can look at the "ad me to the list" thread.

The 02 has a heftier lope to the cam- valvetrain is noisy like a freakin sewing machine.

The Ti's are always rattling- the clutch rattles when not engaged.

Now, to the good things: They look cool. They go fast.

I have a CDL too. That has actually saved me in court instead of being a hinderance.

The biggest problem I've noticed is there are way too many young, attractive ladies approaching me wanting to go for a ride.

And there's that other stuff that people have been talking about too, but those are just little issues.

Very few problems with the Zs or any C5s. They take a licking and keep on ticking. Running on a road course will give you much more fun than a drag strip. I ran my 03Z for 25K miles in the 6 years I had it. 5K of those miles were on road courses. Had wheel bearing, tie rod and power steering issues due to the track use but the powertrain was bullet proof. When I sold it last August it had 43K miles on it and it was running just as strong as it did when I bought it with 18K miles on it.

I had 2 C5s over 12 years. A 97 and the 03 and neither one of them had any rattles or squeaks in them. They are solidly built cars with an extremely stiff superstructure.

If this is a problem send them my way.

As for problems, I think the seals on the diff leak, the dealership fixed mine when I bought it.
