A co-worker 2004 coupe check engine light came on yesterday on his way home. He called me and said he was going straight to the dealer. This is what they told him. Check engine light on due to aftermarket air filter assy,he has an VR system. He also has a service steering column that comes up on the display.Chev wants 650.00 to repair the column. What do ya think??
Fortunately my Chevy dealership was honest when my steering message appeared. They told me about the CLB option (which I then researched on CF) and it was what they'd do if it were their car instead of a new steering lock module and K harness. They told me the K harness would more likely fail than the CLB costing me $600 again in a couple of yrs. They told me to buy the CLB from Corvettes of Houston so they wouldn't have to mark it up. I had it shipped to them, they installed it, and I was good to go. Only reason I didn't install it was they had already dismantled the underdash and, not being the one to have done it, I wasn't sure I'd get all the pieces back right.
Folks here have confirmed to me that the K harness has a high failure rate where as the CLB has a low one. CLB is the way to go. Have your friend install it himself if he can (install instructions avail on here in the CLB threads of which there are many. CLB threads will also give the history of the whole GM column lock recall debacle and potential problems if not addressed thus supporting that the CLB is the best fix).

At least they were honest Michele. It's good to see them admitting the problem.
I had a similar situation when my battery failed. I had to fit a Red Top (as I'd already had a leaker in another car). I tried to get the dealer to refund the price of the battery as it had failed on a public holiday. And the reply? "Oh we can't refund the price for that one. It's a good battery." Mind you I already knew the AC Delco wasn't

Find out which codes are caused by the Vararam. Plenty of members run them successfully although I've heard of the odd engine code. As for the column lock, $650 sounds typical of what dealers are trying to charge to rectify what was formerly a safety recall. It's no longer a safety issue because they introduced software to cut off the fuel. Its just now a big bill to restart the car

Well, I'll be a son of a beehive.... A year ago my car was at the dealer for some "under dash" work. I had just purchased a CLB from CH. I asked the service writer to remove the K harness and install the CLB. I got a call from the dealer telling me they would not, could not install a non GM product in my car. I went down and spoke to the mechanic that was working on the car and asked him to "sneak" it in as a favor to me. He refused saying it was a liability issue. I was upset, but understood. I removed the K harness and installed the CLB later. No problems since.
