I believe the STOCK ECM programming didn't have the 2uel cutoff set to 2mph. When the dealers did one of the myriad of fixes (removing the lock plate I think), I think they programmed in the 2mph cutoff to act as a theft deterrent since the column no longer locked.

I understand it's in both places, the ECM and BCM? (or is that the same thing?), one being the 2mph theft deterrant that can still pop up and stall your car if the key is not read correctly (or dirty). The 2nd being the safety feature, which you may be correct, if the steering wheel locks up while driving.
Either way, can this be reprogrammed out of both (or one if Im wrong) systems to 200mph so no more fuel shutoff? If so, any idea of cost or is there a way to DIY?

I'm really glad I ran into this thread because I was about to start this topic. I have a 98 vert, and I had the CLB installed about 4 years ago. Car was fine until last fall. I got the service colume lock message and sure enough after 2mph the car shut off, but the steering wheel worked fine. After spending $800 on some damn relay the dealer said it shouldn't happen again. Well, 2 months later same thing happened and the dealer said the the relay went bad. And today AGAIN I got the same message and now my car is at the dealer waiting or them to check it out tomorrow. This is getting frustrating as hell and I was hoping someone can figure out why this is happening. The first two times this happened I thought it had something to do with disconnecting the battery because I was doing some LED installs and other minor lighting upgrades. This time i made sure not to disconnect the batter as I installed some HID fog lights and as soon as I went to drive, the message appeared. I really hope someone out there knows whats going on and what can I do to fix this. Thanks.
See this is what I’m afraid of. If the fuel still shuts off, then it seems like there’s no use in getting the bypass. It does seem like for most people the bypass is the ticket and don’t have any issues after that, but if it can happen to you it could probably happen to anyone.
I guess I’ll more than likely go with the Houston clb as most people seem to say it kept the problem from ever happening, or even fixed it on the spot. Then I’d really like to address the fuel shut off. Can any tuner adjust this when they’re tuning the car with any reputable software, or is it just a specific type? Also, say I have the clb and fuel shutoff changed and get that message. I could obviously drive, but how would I get the dang message away lol?
Thanks for all the responses on this btw! I know there’s a million threads out there on the column lock, I just felt my question was a little more unique…

You only get the fuel cutoff issue if GM column lock recall #2 or higher was done to your car.
Youll be fine with recall 1 only and the CLB. That is what I have with my car and no issues since ive done it in 2004.
oh is that right? so the first recall did not include the fuel cutoff then. ok well i'm pretty sure i only have the first recall done, but i'll have to check the paperwork for sure. if this is the case then i should be good to go with the clb!!
if anyone else wants to chime in on the first recall only thing feel free...thanks again!
have a 99 coupe that had REPEATED problems with this crap. Took it to the Stealership over and over and they never got it fixed right.
Last summer installed the column lock bypass and no problems since.
As far as the pull key....wait 10 seconds then the fuel shut off....Had the car's PCM re-tuned at Carlisle by East Coast Supercharging and that problem is gone too!!!!
Getting the re-tune will solve that problem forever too.

It is the dealer crap that IS the source of the problem!!!! Take it out,,install an aftermarket CLB and be done with it!!!The elaborate relay the dealer installs are JUNK,,,and fail repeatedly,,as you have found out. The aftermarket CLB does one thing and one thing only,,,,it sends the proper resistance the tells the computer that all is well,,and poof,,problem solved!!
I don't if this helps the undecided but I've had my 02 MN6 for 3 years now without a problem. The documents I got when I bought the car showed that a recall had been done, can't say which one or both without digging out the paperwork. Anyway while the car was off the road for the winter I fitted the CLB from Corvettes of Houston. the car is fine without having to tune out the shut-off so I'm happy. I've driven the car several times and there are no issues.
Does this help?
I'm glad this topic came back up again. I own a 99 Vert M6 I bought back in July of 09. Both recalls are done. I got the "Service Column Lock" Message this passed Sunday. I plan to order my CLB tonight but my question for you all.
Once I get the CLB and install it will the "Service Column Lock" message go away or do I need to reset my codes for the car?
If you can help me out ASAP that would be great. I already called the dealership and set up appointment for Tuesday to get it check out. But I don't want them putting another junk piece in my car and causing me a problem in the future.
Off topic question. Another reason why my car is going into the shop. My Oil gauge meter stays on 80 PSI. When I start the car the oil gauge seems to work fine. But after 2 sec it starts to slide up to 80 and that's where is stays. Could this be a bad oil pump or a bad sensor?

My 00 MN6 had both recalls performed (Column lock plate removed and fuel shutoff programmed into PCM) and installing the CLB immediately resolved the error message, and thus no longer have the fuel shutoff. The answer to your question is simple: YES. As soon as you install the CLB the error message will clear itself, no need to pull fuses, reset codes or anything like that. Just start it up and drive away - this was exactly my experience.
As for the dealership, cancel that appointment. They will more than likely remove your CLB and install their faulty relay which will only result in getting you stranded again somewhere. Go with the CLB - I will nearly guarantee this will solve all your problems and concerns. (no, I don't work for Corvettes of Houston, just a very happy customer.)
It gets shut off if you get the PCM re-tuned....do not get it re-tuned by a GM dealer...their computer equipment cannot shut if off anyway. Get a custom tune done by someone like East Coast Superchargers or Chuck CoW (although he's a lot more expensive).
While you're at it, they can also tweak some other things to give you a little more "kick" and better fuel economy.
BOUGHT THE CLB FROM C/H AND THOUGHT ALL OF MY PROBLEMS WENT AWAY! AFTER BEING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD FOR AN HOUR I FOUND THAT CHEVROLET HAD PLACED A K HARNESS I GUESS TO ACT AS THE BYPASS SYSTEM. AFTER REMOVING THE K HARNESS AND THROWING DOWN THE ROAD, MY CAR CAME BACK TO LIFE AND RAN LIKE A SCALDED APE...........GL
Had CLB put on last yr and no probs to date. I recall hearing (most likely on one of the CLB threads here) that the CLB has a low failure rate. If I understand correctly, the computer will only stop the car at 1.5 MPH if the CLB fails. So it's a low risk. Yet, I may still have the speed reset to 200 MPH but only if I find someone with the right tuner that knows what they're doing in my area. The other option I figure, is to carry an extra CLB in the car. Then I'd also have one with me as a good Samaritan on club runs if anyone needs it. Low odds mine would fail right after I gave the spare CLB to a Vette buddy anyway.
If anyone knows someone with a tuner new San Luis Obispo, CA could you please let me know via PM? - Thanks

Are you saying if I had both recalls on my car and the K harness is there. remove it before I put the CLB on or can I put the CLB on with the K harness attached?

then scroll down to #451. the k harness is the problem with these cars. they fail. if you plug the clb into the k harness it will not work when the k harness fails. k harness must be disconnected and removed b4 the clb is installed. what year is your car and is it a manual or auto. you may have to look for an additional mod done by gm to some cars if it is a manual.
here is a quote of some questions at the bottom of the first page
Q Why is there sometimes a conflict between the recall mod and my CLB?A For MN6 and M12 cars, the recall mod added a second relay (different from the Harness K which is the GM version of the CLB) between your BCM and your ECL in series with the orange (LOCK) wire. This is to safeguard against a spurious glitch from ever locking your ECL while you are driving (clearly GM is paranoid now). The problem is that this second relay is causing a timing glitch, which resets your CLB immediately after it switches states. The reason it works with your stock ECL is because your ECL motor (being mechanical and slow compared to solid-state logic), is immune to these timing glitches whereas the latching relay inside your CLB sees these glitches and reacts to them.
Q For MN6/M12 cars what can I do if this situation occurs?
A Go into your passenger footwell. Remove your BCM and locate the recall mod relay, remove it and add a jumper wire between the white wire (pin 30) and the orange wire (pin 87). Note that there are two orange wires, so make sure you get the right one!
alright, i've been wondering/asking around/searching this for a while and can't seem to find the answer. the column lock bypass seems to be what everyone goes for so they don't get stranded, as it disables the lock itself. my question is, what about the fuel shutoff? my car has the gm recall done(the first one at least) and from what i've found the fuel shuts off at 1-2mph if you get the dreaded message...unless i'm mistaken, if you have the bypass you could get the message and not have your wheel lock but your fuel would shut off as soon as you move. any help or guidance is appreciated as i would like to do something to prevent this before it's too late...thanks
Here's the deal......The CLB device is well worth the money
and we install tons of them....
However, the system is still not FOOLPROOF and we've seen MANY
customers with CLB devices still get stuck.
The ONLY GUARANTEED SURE FIRE WAY TO NOT GET STUCK...
is to have a CLB DEVICE installed and to GET A CHUCK COW TUNE!
EVERY C5 TUNE I send out has the FUEL CUT DISABLED.
When it happens to YOU, it's a giant pain in the *** and costs
a bunch in the way of time, DOLLARS, and inconvenience!
