I was wondering about that Chuck. I just had my tune a few weeks ago. I never thought to ask if you modified the Fuel cutoff. Thanks for posting this. And thanks for disabling mine.
Like you said, the CLB is not foolproof. I've seen the Wait 10 secs. reinsert key message once in past 5 years. Fuel got cut off, yada, yada. Never seen it happen again but it was frustrating not being able to drive the car. I cleaned the key's pellet. That seemed to make everything work right again although I can't say that was the fix.
Thanks for looking out for us!
..rickko..
PS. The tune feels real good! When are you coming out to So. Cal. again?
I took my car to the dealship to check on this problem. Here what they told me. The K harness went bad. Both recall were done back in 2006. But this is what the dealership told me. "Since the recall was done over 12 months ago the recall part isn't under warranty". Can somebody explain to me why if you buy the car brand new and the orginial part was defected, they put in a new recall part and years later it fails. Why am I responsible to pay for the fix of a recall part?
To fix my issue they said it will cost me $700 plus. But my column isn't locked I just got the message "Service Column Lock"
As you know I'm already pissed off that they told me some crap like that so I ask the service manager a question. If Toyota fixes all these accelerator problems and a 18 months later I'm driving my Camry down the high way and it start speeding up and God bless me to stop the car. When that car goes into the shop I'm responsible for the fix when it was the manufacture recall part that failed. I truly don't understand that.
Service agent told me to call GM. Is it even worth calling them? Does anybody have a customer service number for GM?

Hi NB,
GM Customer Assistance (800) 222-1020 but don't know how far that will get you toward a satisfactory solution.
Many folks here on CF have a better handle on the whole CL issue than I but I do know that GM never got the recall right, K harness has a high failure rate, CLB a low failure rate. Fortunately my Chevy dealership service writer was honest and suggested I get the CLB (even though he was supposed to suggest the GM fix not an after market one. God was watching over me to give me a good guy that day). He said that a new K harness and module would be around $600 and I'd probably be in again in 2 yrs getting another one. I researched the options here on CF and the great guys here helped me make a wise decision; take home message = get the CLB. Dealership even put it on for me since they already had the car with the wires hanging out from under the dash (in fact, service writer even suggested I get CLB on my own from Corvettes of Houston so that he wouldn't have to mark it up - guy). I did and so far, so good.
Just bought a 99 6spd vert with 50K miles. I got the message today, pull key and wait and the service column lock. I found the history in the glovebox and the recall was done in 2007 it says "installed lock plate and harness" claim 217036. I ordered the CLB just now so............. for my situation i need to remove the k harness before installing the CLB correct????
thanks for posting all of that fantastic info 8VETTE7!!! thanks to everyone else as well for the input! i'll be ordering the CLB later today. i just need to figure out exactly which recall is done to mine. i'm almost positive it's only the first one which was just a pcm reflash i believe...
Just bought a 2002 Z06. Question: How do you know if the CLB has been installed? I don't want to order one if the fix has already been done. Talked to previous owners they think only the dealer fix was done but not sure. Don't want to order it and find out it has already been installed. THANK YOU!!!!!!
My steering column is locked when the key is not in the ignition--that would indicate no CLB. Is the only sure way to drop the knee pad and look for the little box? Sounds like getting the knee pad out and back in can be a pain. If it has a K harness how would I tell?
Honestly, the CLB is very easy to install. The one for my new Z06 should be here tomorrow. My column is fine and hasn't locked up on me yet. But insurance is insurance.
I ordered the CLB today. When I get it I remove the drivers side knee pad and look to see if a K harness was installed-it should be aobvious relay box. If no K harness install the CLB--this just bypasses the column lock so the steering will turn whether the ignition is on or off--correct? Anyone have any idea of what % of corvettes have the CLB or have had the steering column lockup? Thanks
Almost all 6-speed C5s will eventually run into this issue. I couldn't put a percentage on it, but I can tell you that the actuator will inevitably stop working. This is insurance.
I just got mine today from Corvettes of Houston (same place I ordered from for my 2002 Z06) and I'll be putting it in in the next couple minutes.
OK, apparently, the way I did it the first time is fine when you don't already have the recall done. That is, when I wanted to unlock the column to install the CLB, I turned the car to the on position, waited for the column to unlock and then unplugged the column locker. I then turned off the car and proceeded with the install.
This will not work if the recall has been done to the car. Trying it that way caused it to believe something was wrong with the CL. So I had to pull the negative terminal on the battery to reset everything. Plugging the terminal back in reset the column lock. This allowed me to start from scratch.
The cigarette tool that came with the CLB last time blew both fuses on my 02Z. However, this time it was required. I used it to unlock the column and it actually worked this time.
After that, I installed the CLB and tested for errors. I did get the "pull key, wait 10 sec" message, but that went away after pulling the key. The column is unlocked and I'm not getting the error message anymore.
Install complete! Now to take the car around the block. (Tradition.)
1) Did the car have a GM K Harness installed and if it was did you disxconnect BOTH ends of the K harness? If you plugged the CLB into the K Harness instead of into the connector that goes directly yo yhe BCM the CLB will not work correctly.
2) In the passenger footwell just to the left of the fuse box and above the BCM is there a spliced purple wire and a relay that has a purple wire going into the wiring base for the relay? It will look like this:
If you have the spliced purple wire and the relay with the purple wire then you MUST bypass the relay in order for the CLB to work correctly. Here is a link with details about bypassing the relay:
