Default AGM batteries

Anyone use them in our cars? They seem to be very good batteries.

I only use them in my C5, since the battery is over the car's computer !

You need to use a battery tender with them IF you leave your car sit. AGM batteries don't like to sit (longer than 3 days) AND DISCHARGE, it hurts them and shortens their life. C5's are battery hogs when sitting.

I know! I had to go every week and start my car this past winter. I have RT now in the car. I rent a garage and the owner won't let me use a tender.. afraid of fire, etc. She is in her late 70's and there is no changing her mind. Good point..double garage just for my vette so I was looking for a better battery. I let the RT sit for 10 day's and had to jump start. I thought it was a better battery then most.
thanks for the info

I have the same optima red top in the car for 4.5 years now. I ONLY use the battery tender in the winter (Dec, Jan, Feb). Car sits for over a month at a time and starts right up each and every time... No battery issues since using the Optima.

I have the Exide Orbital, have had much better luck with the Exide than the Optima. Still pays to have a battery tender if the car is not driven much.

If your car is a daily driver Red Tops are good batteries. the downside is they don't like being discharged so if you only use your car at weekends then you may be better with a traditional battery. this car has a small drain even when idle and it eats batteries. Unless of course you plug it into a battery tender when its idle.

Still running my OE AGM battery. Over seven years and still acting like it was new. Only driven a few miles per month, not kept on a maintainer. I know I will probably buy one very soon, but it is interesting how long this one has lasted.

Thought I had lost it a couple of months ago, but charged it several times and all is good.

Update soon I bet.

Mine use to be a DD. Now though it's mostly weekends.
Reason I'm looking at a new battery. RT isn't going to cut it

Yellow tops are made for deep discharges (like marine batteries) but you don't get something for nothing. Most deep discharge batteries do not last as long as a good non-AGM, like the AC Delco Professional or even the Costco Kirkland batteries - either of which have been known to last 8 years or more.

Remember too, that you really don't have to worry about leaks. Battery manufacturers solved that problem back in 2004 when a redesigned (non-AGM) by Johnson Controls hit the market. The Costco Kirkland battery costs half what a Red or Yellow top costs and yet will last a long time.

I'll let you know how my Yellow Top goes Dave. 3 years and going strong and no sign of leaks unlike my AC Delco. But I wont tell you how much it cost...............

Buy a battery tender. Way cheaper than an expensive battery and guaranteed.

Remember my judgement was colored by a leaking AC Delco. Those days are, hopefully over.

After having 2 different regular batteries leak on me, I bought an Optima Red Top. It is 5 years old and still going. They are expensive but not as expensive as the damage a leaking battery will cause.

DeeGee,

Let's clarify that your AC Delco battery was a pre-2001 vintage, correct?

There is no need, I repeat, there is no need to worry about leaking batteries any more! The last leakers were sold in the year 2000. I can almost guarantee you that your yellow top will not last as long as a good non-AGM battery.
