Is anyone here running or ran no mufflers with cats on a completley stock Zo6? I did a search and found "some" information on this but I was hoping to get a little more input.
I have an o3 Z.
Any help, comments, pics, or vids would be great. Thanks in advance, folks
Sounds horrible. Too raw, no good tone at all. If you want loud, go with B&B Bullets or GHL Bullets. Go for longtubes as well if you really like that sounds. I went B&B Bullets and LG Pro Longtubes and I'll never go back.
I think he OP is considering it as a light weight performance/sound mod---
I think it will be very deep sounding and pop a lot when you let off- I did a similar thing on my old LT1 Firebird but I had tailpipes custom bent from the intermediate pipe (single exhaust on those) so it wouldn't look weird-
I did it after the Ti was pulled off to modify and then again on the way back to have it re-installed. I kinda liked the sound, but the resonance was a killer even with ear plugs. I don't know if turn downs will help this out, but unless the RPM was above 2500 the whole car resonated and it was painful!!
Maybe I'm just a wuss, but I like the mod Ti sound
I took my Ti exhaust off to modify it and installed turn downs. EVERYTHING resonated in the car and I could also smell exhaust? Not sure if it was because the exhaust dumped under the car and not out the back? Although, when I pulled up to a harley guy reving his 1200 custom...I rev'd back a little and I look on his face was priceless!
The Ti exhaust with muffler bypass sounds much better. I don't have to scream to talk to the passenger under acceleration (my girlfriend hated this lol).
If you are going to do this prepare to set off car alarms and get pulled over for excessive noise.

This guy types the truth
I did the same thing while my Ti was being modified. Made turn downs that bolted to the h-pipe. The sound was WAY TOO LOUD, IMO and at highway speeds the drone was so bad I would get a head ache. I drove it like this for about a month. I rarely drive the car so it wasn't that big of a deal, since I had a backup.
I have no mufflers on my 02 Z. I had the shop remove the Ti's and fab me up what is similar to the Bullets set up. No resonators, no muffler, nothing. It sounds amazing! I get compliments everyday, multiple times a day. I love it! It is a bit loud, and by bit I mean very! Inside the car it is actually liveable but outside the car people ask me how I get away driving a racecar around. It has a nice deep tone down low, slightly motorboatish, but up top it just screams like a tuned C5R. My only complaint is now I can hear the stock H pipe gingle. Best $350 I ever spent. That was fabbed up custom, installed and tips included.
I will try and dig up my video camera and have a montage of sound clips sometime this week. If not I will have to do it via my phone and that wont do it justice at all.
Its just depends on what you like. As you can see from the variation in the responses your not going to get a concrete answer. Unbolt them, go for a drive and see if you like it. I ran the Borla straight pipes for a long time. Once I added the LG headers, long tubes, and deleted the CATs it sounded too "tinish" so I added Borla stingers.
To me it would make a difference if I was using the car as my DD or not. I drove just 20 miles with no mufflers. After my trip I felt like I just got back from an all day AC/DC concert! My ears were ringing so bad from the drone.
My car is a DD, I don't think I could handle the noise everyday. If I just drove it on weekends, it might be a different story. I agree with dragon84, unbolt 'em, fab yourself some turn downs (my exhaust shop did it for free just because they loved my car ) and see how you like it.
Hi khindmon,
I run my Z (basically stock) with OEM cats and no mufflers. Essentially made up a custom cat-back system, if you will. My exhaust tips do have resonators, which I think takes a bit of the raw edge off the exhaust note. I do get some resonance in the 65-75 mph range, but above and below that it is surprisingly mellow. I also have an interior partition, which helps a bit. Oh yea, and I get a ton of compliments on how it sounds. When you get on it, it's simply magical

Wamara,
Thank You.....you just gave me something to really think about. Off to the muffler shop in the morn.
I have Borla Straight Pipes on my stockish 02Z and as long as you get the stock H pipe replaced with an X they sound badass!!!! with the stock H pipe they sound like ***...burble and backfire way too much...
With new X-pipe totally different story! it is incredible how good it sounds...I still have stock exhaust manifolds so they are loud but not insane loud.. i will post a link of when i took my car to the track and you can then hear what it sounds like at WOT.
