Yep, I noticed that too and had heard the sensor will change it. Note that your heads up display will get VERY bright when you drive toward the sun when it is low. Pretty cool....

HUD covers in a jet are to avoid scratching when getting in or out of the cockpit or when the troops are servicing the jet. It's even possible to hit it with your PEC (personal equipment connector) on your lifejacket. That can crack it which is mega $$$
With the Vette its well protected in the recess so no additional protection is needed. That's assuming that nothing is spilt in there. The only thing that could affect it is dust collecting on the lens. Clean it occasionally with a dry cloth but make sure not to press too hard and scratch it.
