Default Tune Up

My C5 has 97k on the clock and the dealership said at 100k it will need a tune up that includes new plugs and wires. They quoted $560. Is there more to a tuneup than this? I cant imagine plugs and wires cost that much.

Just for comparison I stopped by the dealer to price plugs and wires. The oem wires were $181 (thats not a typo) and the plugs were $9.50 each.

I'm guessing they may include other items at the 100k service. Possibly sepentine belt, AC Belt, air filter, gas filter ? and labor at what ? $95/hr.

Whatever. If you are so inclined, can follow instructions (from the site here) and can turn a wrench a bit, you can do a lot of this stuff yourself.

Just an example from one of the supporting vendors here (GM Parts House):

||--Genuine GM Tune-Up Items--||

12495519 – GMPP red spark plug wire set – $57.60
12621258 – GM AC Delco Iridium spark plugs – $5.86 each
10287788 – 97 & 98 fuel filter – $13.09
19239926 – 99 – 04 fuel filter/pressure regulator – $81.88
25042562 – 97 – 04 air filter – $11.86

I guess you are going to need to know whats been done over the years because if nothing has been done you will be looking at stuff like: flush replace coolant, change transmission filter and fluid, change rear end fluid, brake fluid, the belts mentioned above and take a look at the hoses.

It really depends on how the car was maintained.

Good luck

I agree, do it yourself and save yourself tons of money.

Anytime I do a tuneup on a car I replace the wires,plugs,inline fuel filter. I look at the air filter, a/c belt,serpentine,and all hoses, radiator fluid, all other fluids and replace if need be. I normally do a tune up every 15 to 30 K depending on how things look.

They wanted $315 to install my own plugs and wires. I told them never mind.
