Not difficult to do but once they are off you may find a difference in color between where the BSM's protected the paint from the sun and the rest of the side of the car. As always YMMV
Most seem to get them off clean. I've seen a few instances here where the car had been repainted and there was a ridge in the paint or a different shade where the BSM had been.
They are Pewter, but it sounds like a lot of work and the results could be problems, so for now they'll stay on the car. The paint underneath has to be darker than the rest of the car after 11 years of fading.
