Blue Smoke out the exhaust not covered under warranty ?
I recently started to notice that my car was blowing out blue smoke out the exhaust. I took it in for warranty work, they replaced the catalytics and returned the car to me stating the car is fine. Im sure its still smoking blue the catalytics are doing a good job at burning the smoke. Any ideas on what I can do to get this job taken care of.
BTW the car is a 2002 C5 with 40k miles with BS warranty through CarMax.
Blue smoke (appearing out the exhaust while you are driving) generally indicates a ring problem. Have them run a leak-down test to determine how well the rings are sealing. Without looking at your warranty, I can't say whether or not this is covered. However, I believe that it should be covered.
If the smoke appears only after idling for a while (smoke billows out the exhaust, immediately afterward), then your valves/valve guides/valve seats may be worn out or damaged.

The funny part about that, I asked them to do a leak down test. They told me to perform a leak down test on the vehicle would be a $350 labor charge.
The way a dealership would handle it is that if the test does not reveal a warranty repair condition, the customer pays for the test. If the test shows that the condition does exist, the dealership runs all charges through the warranty coverage.
Hi There,
How much oil are you using in 2k miles? See what the shop manual specifies as normal.
I would pull all the spark plugs until you find the ones that are fouled with oil. If you have a friend that is a mechanic have him do the leak down test on those cylinders as well as a compression test on all cylinders.Have you replaced the pcv valve delco p/n cv948c. To test blow w/your mouth, on the end you should not be able to blow into it, on the other end you can blow into it. ops ck ok. other wise replace it.

You can buy your own gauge for under $30 at Autozone or O'Reillys. Add a case of beer and you can do the test yourself for under $40 out of pocket .....
I took the plugs out and checked them, and number 7 was extra crispy with alot of carbon build up surrounding the plug. I'll end up doing the compression check this weekend and see the outcome. I think the dealer is just being too lazy to do the work !

I know for a fact the car burns slot of oil, I rarely drive it. We took a 5 hour trip on Saturday, I made sure the fluids were topped off. By the time we were mid way to our destination the Low Oil Level showed up on the heads up display!

You're basically screwed.
They won't fix it just because it smokes. Then when you have a total engine failure they will tell you that you ran it low on oil.
Never too much I'm going to do an oil change, change the plugs and compression check an see what the outcome is and take it back to them. I really want to start modding it, but I don't want to start with a hurt motor.

Reason: Spelling
As stated, if its dumping blue smoke while driving, then its probably rings. If it only happens when you first start up or first pull off from a light as such, then its probably the valve stem seals or guides.
Hi There,
You are correct 180- 190 psi for the compression test.If number seven is much lower ( say a 160 psi) than the rest thats the one that needs new compression rings & oil control rings installed.Read my earlier post. The problem is the # 2 compression ring tension is 9lbs causing that ring to float or flutter in the cylinder & the corrected one is 13 lbs & eliminates this flutter & oil consumption.
