Default RPM question

This is my first automatic car. I always had manual transmission cars. Its 2001 c5 with automatic transmission.
When i floor the gas pedal, rpm goes up to 3000-3500 and then it changes to higher gear. It doesnt go upto 5000 or 6000 rpm

how can i get maximum power from automatic transmision? Is there anyway i can redline using automatic transmission?

It should go further in the RPM range than what you stated.

Is your traction system engaged? if so it will engage and make it shift earlier than set -

Try hitting it with the traction system disengaged

If not you can have it checked at a shop or you can get a Handheld Tuner and play with the shift points and firmness - which you will really enjoy with the A4

Do you have the 3.15 rear or 2.73 gears?

Thanks,Matt

Don't know why your's only goes to 3K-3.5K rpm when you hit the gas pedal. Mine certainly goes past that rpm range.

I have 3.15 rear and corsa exhaust. Power wise it does realy good. it throws you back in seat but i was little concern about shifting point. I hardly see it going above 2000 rpm. will handheld tuner mess up gas mileage?

You saying when you floor the car in D it shifts at 3000rpm?
That isn't right even for a stock setup.

My A4 will go to 5500 plus before it shifts.

You are "hitting" it right? Not to cast any dispersions but if you were to roll on the power and not press it all the way it might shift at a much lower rpm than if you just rolled it on, like to the floor.

My A4 is tuned so its different from stock but I do recall that if I put it to WOT prior to the tune it definitly shifted higher than 2000 - 3000 even prior to the tune.

Is it possible the car was "tuned" (not well) prior to you getting it? And nothing else going on right? No messages on DIC, no trouble codes etc . . .?

I bought it used and its highly possible that it was tuned. Check guage light was flashing on HUD but it was because of high tire pressure in my low profile tires.

This is getting like a Pandora's box Again, not pointing this at you but more info is always better :-)

When i floor the gas pedal, rpm goes up to 3000-3500 and then it changes to higher gear

I have 3.15 rear and corsa exhaust. Power wise it does realy good. it throws you back in seat but i was little concern about shifting point. I hardly see it going above 2000 rpm.

Check guage light was flashing on HUD but it was because of high tire pressure in my low profile tires.

So . . .now we have a modified (possibly tuned) A4 with 3.15 rear, low profile tires run at "high" pressure and we are not sure when its shifting (somewhere between 2000 and 3500) on a "hard" acceleration

Matt asked : Is your traction system engaged?

I asked : You are "hitting" it right? Not to cast any dispersions but if you were to roll on the power and not press it all the way it might shift at a much lower rpm than if you just rolled it on, like to the floor.

I'm not sure we coverd those questions?

If you dont want to beat on it you dont have to, you can turn off AH/TC (but even with it on mine shifts at high...sorry dont know number...but its up there..RPM) just to see if TC is retarding ignition due to excessive wheelspin (possibly due to high tire pressure) and thus holding rpm's down. And start at 20 mph if you want and "put the skinny pedal on the carpet". You dont have to jump on this car to get it to switch to the WOT tables (which would have it reving higher and shifting harder) but it has enough low end torque that if you halfheartedly press the pedal "almost all the way down" it may not think you're serious and use the more conservative fuel trims and shift points/pressures.

Just a thought.

Not sure what you mean by "high" tire pressure ? I hope you are not reading the max pressure on the side of the tire and inflating it to that? The pressure on the side that says max pressure is the pressure at which the tire can sustain the most weight (as in a heavy load), it is not recommended that you run that pressure. I have regular sized (stock sized Michelins) and I run at whats printed on the door, 30 psi cold and when I see this topic come up most people say thats what they use (and I have to assume many of them have larger lower profile tires than mine).

I doubt you are getting much perceptable wheelspin at 2000 - 3000 rpms even if they were over inflated but that doesnt mean its not happening. With slippery tires AH/TC will kick in quite quickly and hold the car back in every respect.

Good Luck

I just love threads like this one, You need a translator to get what the op is talking about. You try to help and he don't answer your questions.

I think this may be the issue. I press gas pedal all the way down with traction control on ( i dont have active handling, its 2001). i will try to press it halfheartedly and see how it behaves.

Maximum air pressue on sidewall is 51. and i have kept 40 in all tires. They are 275/30/20 in rear and 245/30/20. I trued 30 psi but i damaged a wheel edge by hitting a pothole. 40 works just fine.

You don't go by whats on the tire, You go by the car and the Vette is 30 cold, You have a picture of said wheels? I would be willing that some of your trouble is the tire sizes, you have to have about an inch difference between the front and rear in height, Maybe you have that, But it doesn't sound like it. Not having the correct difference between the front and rear will cause havic with the TC.

I think we hit something here.

pics of the wheels are here:

wheels size is 20" all around. they all have 30 profile. so i dont think there is height difference between front and rear. front wheels are skinier than real wheels tho. what to do?

turn off your traction control and try it and see what happens, I bet seeing that the tires are the same height the computer thinks you have lost traction and goes into reduced power mode. Try it with the TC off.
You might have to get different tires for the front, Did you put the tires and wheels on the car?

previous owner put those stupid wheels on it. ride is too rough and noisy with those 30mm low profile tires even after insulating the whole car

If you have access to the car go out and try what I said to do, You said the TC is always on, TURN IT OFF and try it, I bet it will be like a new car, Be careful though with the new found power.

A quick question. If i press the switch next to cupholder. Is it going to turn both active handling and traction control off? or do i have to do someting else to turn active handling off.

If you just push the button you will see the rear of a C5 in yellow on the dash by the speedo, That means the TC and AH is off, If you only want to turn of TC hold the button in for 15 secs and it will say Comp mode in the DIC.
