The other day on my way home my temp creeped up higher than usual for the car. It got up to 235 which is alot higher than the normal 220 it normally stays at. It kept climbing until i got to a stop light and it cooled off just fine than back up when driving. So i went to the auto parts store and picked up a new thermostat thinking that might be the problem and also hosed out some crap from my radiator. Upon completion of that and burping the system it was fine at idle and still was creeping during normal driving. So i started to do process of elimination and began to think of what i did to the car since before it began to overheat and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I ordered a splitter from a shop and installed it. But its the poly rubber type of spitter that i was hesitant to try but did it anyways. So im assuming while driving it was folding over creating a block for the proper air flow. So i ripped it off and wallah!!! Never got above 198 the whole time and driving was back to normal. Man i never wouldve thought it wouldve hindered the airflow like it did. This is deff a learn as i go scenario and will not use that product again. I tell ya, i loved the look of the splitter but next one i get will be a PLASTIC one that wont flop over during normal driving conditions. Jay
The electric fans are programmed to come on far north of 160, so you should never just switch to a lower temp thermostat without reprogramming the fan activation temps.
Personally, I would not use a 160 degree thermostat.
Its on Corvette Mods.com. I just looked at their site and they are no longer selling it on there unless i looked in the wrong spot. Jay
Ah. gotcha. I have that one, but built an ABS reinforcement to keep that sucker in place, loking good and yes, somewhat functional.
This is the original rienforcement (sheet metal) but it was too sharp and too rigid. The ABS follows the same design, but is flexable to withstand impact without cutting though the material.
I ordered one of those sometime back, but when it arrived, I never put it on. I realized how flimsy it was and knew it would be nothing but a problem, plus I thought it looked cheap. I now have an ACI. I guess like the old saying goes, "you get what you pay for".

And you're reasoning for not using one would be what? Name one con to switching out to a 160 t-stat.

I think your going to throw a monkey wrench into the PCM software. The engine isn't ever get to the normal operation temperture. Mine is stock and it's nomal for it to run at about 200 degrees, and if I'm in stop and go traffic and the A/C on it runs at 205-210 degrees. But hay, maybe it will work fine for you. I'd be afraid of it running to rich as the temps float at the 180 degrees point ?

All this looks to be is a piece of garage door guard that sells on Ebay for astronomical amounts. You can pick one up at RONA or Home Depot for $15 bucks. There is a DIY thread on this "splitter." It looks horrid...JMO
