Default Help me kill my electrical elf.

Hey guys, Havnt had much time to look into this yet but maybe one of you can help. When i turn my headlights on the backlight to my tach and speedo goes out and the running lights in the rear of the car dont come on. The brake lights and blinkers work but there is nothing lit as far as a running light. Any advice where to start would be appreciated. The car is a 2003 vert with turbos if that helps. Thanks, Kevin

Do a search for Bill Curry here on the Forum. He is pretty much the electrical genius here.

Hey Kevin.......Have you recently done anything to the car....added a mod or anything like that? Reach out for Bill Curlee who knows everything electrical.....Good luck. I'm sure Bill can point you in the right direction.

I recently haven't done any mods or anything that could have disrupted any of the wiring. This came completely out of the blue.

Sound like the multifunction switch is going out. That's the first place I would look.

everything on the mulitfunction switch works. its just the running lights and back light on the tach and speedo that arent working. you may be right though, im not going to discount any suggestions. How can you test a multifunction switch without actually trying a different one that you know works?

I had the exact same problem. The headlights worked, but interior and rear lights wouldn't come on when the headlights switched on. The solution was to tinker with the multifunction switch. There is a thread on how to fix it. I had to buy a new one after messing up the fix.

Sometimes I could get the interior and rear lights to come on by bumping or turning the switch on and off.

I don't know how to test it. But, I do know that since it serves more than one function, any number of those could go out, and leave the other functions working.
Since your running lights, etc., function when in that position but don't function when in the headlight on position, I would say that function has a malfunction.
Oh no I've made myself crosseyed....

Yeah, the multifunction switch is usually the cause and its got a fairly high failure rate.

lots of little parts and contacts going on in there. when they fail some contacts don't work properly and odd things happen with the lights inside and out.

Just found the two threads on the removal and repair of the multifunction switch and im going to get on it tomorrow after work. ccording to the thread the dash lights and running lights are on the same contact so it looks like that is the culprit. I love this forum.

Be careful inside the switch. The last time I read that thread, it neglected to talk about the spring inside. Just know there is a spring in there and to not lose it.
