Default *sigh another broken valve spring

02' Z06, with 90k miles. I was leaving a red light and it gave out at around 30 mph. I felt a huge loss in power and heard a tapping noise from the motor so I shut the engine off and coasted to a parking lot. I took off the valve covers and this is what I found:

What should I do next?

As Barney Fife would say..."NIP IT ! NIP IT IN THE BUD " ! I would replace them all as a set and be done with it. Especially since this isn't the first. Good luck !

From the picture can you tell if any other damage has been done?

Pretty hard to tell from a pic but the less it was driven afterwards the better. A tow from the parking lot would have been best.

That's what I did. Did not restart the car.

I would go the whole set route as well!! I'd post this in the tech/performance section,,and get recommendations as to brands. I read performance,,but only have heard of ones like Comp Cams beehive springs,,but I know there are others that are highly regarded!! Do them all and get some peace of mind!!

It looks like the end of the valve is no longer in the center of the spring.

I'd assume the valve went into the cylinder bore and interfered with the piston. Until you get the head off you won't know how ugly it got.

Cross your fingers, hopefully the damage is minimal.

The end of the valve is about halfway down the center of the collapsed spring. I guess I need a compression test huh?

How are the PAC 1218 or COMP 918's?

Don't bother with a compression test. There is no way that cylinder will pass.

Just pull the cylinder heads and assess the damage. See if the cylinder wall is damaged, and inspect the top of the piston for damage. At a bare minimum you'll need to have a shop check the head out before installing a new valve and new valve springs all around.

EDIT---
If you put a long nose plyers on the end of the valve can you pull it closed? If so, maybe a compression test is a good idea...

I've got duals in mine, far less likely that that will happen. Sucks dude. From the pick it looks like the spring is off center from the break and not the pushrod. I'd definatly check it all out before you put it back together

Are you running the original cam? A mismatched cam/spring combo will result in broken springs. That's why I ask.

OK so if I were going to replace mine which is better? I know this is an opinion question that has been addressed several times before but the search function is much help.

I see a pretty good price difference from:

PAC 1518 for $356.00
Comp 918 for $169.00
Yellow GM LS6 replacement springs for $79.00

Any constructive feedback on these three options?

I'm planning on swapping them myself. I have never tried but it doesn't look all that hard.

Thanks for the input

Tom
