At the gas station last night..Guy in the next bay comes over
towards me and says "Wow that is a beautiful car...
in 15 years I hope to be able to have one,
how much did you pay for that car? " I say 30,000
( actually 29,000 3 years ago ) ..He says " 30,000!!!!!
that car looks like it should cost 100,000 plus"
I say well I bought it used...the car is 8 years old.
" 8 YEARS OLD..you mean this is not a brand new car???"
No it's 8 years old..The look on his face should be on the
VISA Priceless commercial....
Made me feel really good...maybe some of you too..

WTF...100,000 plus???Sounds like he was mentally challenged
I've had numerous people shocked to learn my Z is a 2002. Even a friend who used to have 2001 Vette himself thought it was nearly new.... But he was never that much of a car guy. I've told people several times buying a used Vette is the way to go partially because of this, the car still looks like an awesome sports car and too many people just don't know how to spot the newest models.
Seeing as the C6 was an evolution of the C5 looks/shape wise, I don't see the C5 getting particularly dated until a new Vette departs from the basic style quite a bit. Now how far will the C7 stray from the C6 styling???
I always love that A guy at my work just bought a mustang GT and made the comment that he wished he could have bought a car like mine but knew it was out of his budget. I had to break his heart and inform him that he could have bought my 99' for far less than half of what he paid

I got almost the exact same conversation when I filled up the other day. The average person on the street doesn't know one year Vette from another so if the see on that is nice and shiney they assume it's new.
All that time you've put into yours with the buffer to have it reflecting like a mirror pays off.
You have the satisfaction of driving that beauty, and picking up well earned random compliments is a bonus.
Classic good looks and a well cared for car causes people to think the C5 is a new car. Nice compliment you got on yours.
I agree, countless times people have been amazed to find out my car is 13 years old. They think its new! One woman, the first day I owned the car said it looked better then her husbands 09!
I admit when I went to buy mine in '05, I didn't know what a good deal they were either. It was my first Vette and I thought I'd be shopping for a C4 or C3 (of course, I didn't even what a C4 or C3 was by name back then.)
I also thought that insurance would kill me or the idea of owning a Vette. Turns out, the demographic of Vette owners keeps the insurance very affordable.
Declining value only means I "may" be able to afford another one, maybe a vert this time around, or a Z--something different than a coupe.
Though another coupe won't disappoint either, you gotta look at the positive aspect of things. I could sit here and whine that my 97 is maybe worth half what I paid for it, but why, I'll just enjoy the heck out of it.
I think the C5 has the look of an exotic supercar. The C6 while great looking has returned to the look of an American muscle car and is more easily identified as a corvette. I drove through the video monitered gate at the local airport last week and got identified as a masserati...
