I too hear this quite often, as many are surprised that it's already 6 years old. I even had a girl-friend of mine ask "is this a Porsche or something?" That was the best one yet!
It will not be long and you will be able to get in a C 5 for $5000.
if it's a POS. The sub $10K NICE C5 is probably coming in a couple years, though.
People who have never shopped for Vettes are routinely shocked when I tell them how little I paid for mine. When add that I average about 20 MPG (not a lot of highway), have nearly zero maintenance expense, and can fit two golf bags with pull carts in the hatch they about cr@p themselves...
Just goes to show you, everyone may not know Corvettes.....but everyone knows Corvettes!
Very true. Not only heard this in my 98, but also my 92. Just goes to show, keep em shiny and many don't know the difference, but people know the 'Corvette' name.
Great story. Happens here too. We need to remember that the general public, and yes some corvette owners either prior or present may fall into that category,.....doesnt know squat when it comes to new vs old. For example.....
I had a guy pull up next to me in his Porsche while I was pumping gas, giving it a little rev. He said man thats a nice looking car. I said thanks and continued pumping. He said that he use to have a corvette, but his Porshe is so much better. I said really? Want to run? He said no. I said ok. Well what vette did you use to have. We said a C7. I told him wow thats nice, enjoy your porsche. What I really wanted to saywas that I am glad you got rid of the vette because you didnt even know what the hell you owned.
Ok I promise.....story coming to an end....
THE BEST PART of all this. I get back to the house and told my wife about it. She looked at me and said "They dont even make C7's" and laughed.
From: "This is not a psychotic episode, but a cleansing moment of clarity."
I don't care how old and dated the C5 becomes, it will always look fabulous. Just like the C2's and early C3's. The body style is timeless and will endure.
All that time you've put into yours with the buffer to have it reflecting like a mirror pays off.
You have the satisfaction of driving that beauty, and picking up well earned random compliments is a bonus.
Larry (VT ORNGE)
Thanks Larry...( and to all who replied )...nice to hear from you..
I've always been underwhelmed by the C6 styling...much prefer the C5. The "gash" vent in the front fenders of the C6 actually looks crude compared to the sculped vent in the C5. And that goofy "mouth" on the front of the C6 pales compared to the front design of the C5. Of course, it's just my opinion.......but I'm in no hurry to "trade up"
I get that a lot too. People will walk over admiring the car (99 arctic white coupe with 95K) and wish that they could afford a car like that. Most of the time they're driving a pretty new car valued over $20K. I tell them that they could buy a car just like this one for less than they paid for their new car. Most of them don't believe me.
You're right....most people think that if they see a really nice looking, older corvette that it's way out of their price range. Not true in most cases. Of course most people couldn't tell the difference between a 97 C5 and an 04 C5...they all look new to them.
I tell them to go to the show here in Carlisle in August and check out the tons of vettes for sale. They can pick one up for almost whatever they want to pay for one.
My new to me 2001 Coupe looks awesome. Many think it is brand new and no one believes it is 10 years old. None-the-less, I stopped by Paul Miller Dealership and parked perpendicular to and behind a spanking brand new ZR1 that was parked next to a spanking brand new Z06. Then it looked its age. I guess I'll just wait 10 years.

Well now answering myself I must add that just last Sunday I pulled along a beautiful red Ferrari (F499 or something like that...don't know my Ferraris') and I told the guy he had a beautiful car. I also went on to ask him if he wanted to trade to which he replied "Sure, as long as you take over the payments too." I said no thanks, mine's all paid for. He returned the nice car compliment.
