Hello,
I went up to Carlisle and picked up a new set of American Racing headers but the problem is they gave me ones for an 2001-2004 and I have a 2000. The air tubes dont fit and there is no fitting for the dipstick shaft. I tried to search on how to modify it but didnt really get anything. I spent all day today putting them on and didnt figure out I got the wrong ones till I was near the end, so I really dont want to have to take them off again.
Has anyone modified 2001-2004 headers to fit a 2000? How is it done?
I bought 01 headers for my 99 and cut and rewelded smog tube no big deal, I bought full length headers of craigslist for $150.00 (Stainless works) I made them fit for $150.00!!Had to drive 4 hours to get them !

I would see if they will pickup shipping and return them for the correct headers.

You either need the 01+ air tube for the passenger side or use block off plates and have the Air system tuned out. I actually bent my passenger side tube and made it work, but it was tough and I don't suggest trying it.
The dipstick can easily be bent to fit. You will have to be creative when mounting it.
Coming up empty with that search but thanks for the help!
What if I cut my Air tube for my 2000 and inserted a 6" length of rubber tubing, like is on the drivers side, to get it where I need?
that will work for a temperary fix until you can get the correct air tube.if you don't have to worry about smog,i would just get rid of the whole air setup all together and block off the air tubes on the headers.
you can put a WTB add in for sale section.someone probably has one.if not i'm sure Gene will help you out.

Thanks for the advise. I will post a WTB add, but who is Gene?

Go ahead, it won't hurt anything. All the AIR system wants to do is put air into the exhaust so the PCM doesn't go nuts. Doesn't matter if it's coming through rubber tubing, or aluminum tubing.
Cut the tube where you want it, splice in the rubber tubing, route it away from any heat source, attatch to header. Done.
Sorry that is bad luck...... I had a similar situation happen to me. I was at Carlisle and picked up a set of Kooks headers for my 99, went to my buddies house to put them on this weekend, checked and made sure the headers were right and everything was there. Started installing everything (by the way this isnt a easy as it looks to do) Got all the way to the mid pipe and they sent me 2 drivers side pipes All we did was look to see that they were there we didnt pull them out and check to make sure they were right.
Damn the luck on a holiday weekend, no biggie i will be on the phone tomorrow morning to get me a new one sent out over night.
*Update* So after thinking about it, I wanted something to show for all the work I did this weekend so I decided to cut the air tube and put in about an 8" length of rubber tubing. I also made a mount to attach the oil dipstick shaft to the air tube bolt. Both worked perfect, but I think I am still going to get a 01+ airtube and dipstick because its not a clean look but it works.
I had a scary moment though when I went to start it for the first time, I turned the key and click...nothing. My heart sank. I knew it had to be something with the starter since I did have to take it off to get the headers to fit. I was hoping I didnt have to take it back off cause everything would have had to come off. There is minimal room between the headers and starter so I knew it was going to be a b1tch to get to. So after jamming my hand down between the headers and block and started feeling around, I get zapped. My own dumb fault for being in a rush and not disconnecting the battery but it helped me find the problem. I was missing one of the 3 positive cables that go to the starter. After a couple more bloody nuckles and a few more minutes of swearing, it was on. I reconnected the battery and she came right to life.
I will say this, the car should have came with headers from the factory! The sound is simply amazing! I have a mid-america cad-back and it always sounded more exotic then "muscley" but now its got that deep grumble that you want. I can def feel a little bit more get up and go in the seat of the pants but can't wait to get it tuned and get the full potential of these.
The most rewarding thing about the whole project was when I took it for a cruise with my buddy and we pull up to a light next to a bunch of what looked like high school kids in the car. Of course I had the windows down and so did they and the guy sittin in the passanger seat asked me "How much fun is that to drive?" I said "A lot more now" and he asked why. I gave the motor a nice little rev and the car full of high school kids all lost it! They all sarted laughing and cheering and it simply made the whole project that much more enjoyable.
I would like to say thanks to everyone for all you're help through this project, it is apprectiated. I wouldnt have gotten it done if it wasnt for yall.
