So I bought a Borla XR-1 exhaust from a member here about a week ago now. I noticed it didn't come with clamps, so I ordered those from Summit and got them today. I was pumped to finally get the Flowmasters the owner before me had installed off and replaced with something louder.
I went under the car tonight to find this:
The left is the transmission, so the pictures looking forward to the front of the car. It looks like the prior owner threw some janky 'x-pipe' on there and it's all welded together, and what are those tiny resonator looking pieces? They don't look like cats, and they still look too small to be resonators.
I'd rather not keep this piece on here anymore. I'd like to match my Borla XR-1 cat-back, so would a Borla x-pipe do the trick for me? The XR-1's just look like a 'longer' product than other systems and I'm not sure it'd fit. I don't want to get headers since I'm planning on doing a turbo set-up in the future so I want to stay with just an x-pipe on this.
I appreciate all the help. I hate when the easy things just seem to be the worst. All I wanted was a simple cat-back and now it's becoming quite the process.
That's definately not a stock set up. After you cut it out, I think you will be too short (in front of your new x-pipe) and will have to visit a muffler shop to have a couple of extensions made. It will be hard to tell how long they need to be unless you work from the back forward. Leave all the clamps loose because you will need to drop the X-pipe to get the front extension pieces on. Then work it from front to rear.
Hopefully you have access to a lift?
Ughhh...maybe I should just get a set of headers and x-pipe and just sell it later when I get a turbo.
So I'm assuming a set of LG streets or XS power headers will bolt right up to my XR-1s?
Thanks for the help guys. I'd keep the X-pipe if it wasn't junk and welded to the cat-back (no sawzall or cutters but I suppose I could scrounge either up).

That would be my first choice. Starting with new headers, X pipe from same manufacturer as the headers.
Your cat back will fit the new X pipes & your good to go. You also now have a complete new exhaust system, & know what your working with. Good luck.
just take everything to a muffler shop. the shop i used only charged me a hundred for x pipe and cat back install. im not jackin up a car 3' and cuttin, welding and fabin, when you can pay a pro to do it for a hun

Really doesn't look like that would be a very effective x-pipe - if you want to go with headers, they usually come with an x-pipe and you'll be set to go. If you don't want to go to that much expense, try a Bassani x-pipe - I had one on my '00 and it was a very high quality product.
I'd like to stick with just an x-pipe if it'll bolt right up to what look to be the stock headers. That way this won't push into a spring-time project.
Anyone know of an x-pipe that'll bolt up to stock headers and mate to the XR-1's?

You have all ready recieved several opinions as what/what not to do.
To make things much easier on your self & to be able to make the correct decission, why not get ahold of the EXPERTS at Borla & find out what X pipe they recommend for your Borla cat back? Most logical? Good luck.

I just found out what to do. An XR-1 system replaces the h-pipe completely and makes the use of any x-pipe impossible.

So really, anything listed before and what I was looking at was completely incorrect. Also, those tiny 'resonators' are stock cats. It's the janky looking u-bends that will be cut off and replaced with the XR-1 system. So, I don't need to buy anything - just cut off that section back, slip-fit the XR-1 resonator on and bolt everything else up.
