My car get attacked by a gravel truck a few weeks ago. The body shop still has the car. I have not had a chance to try the HUD but am very concerned they installed the incorrect windshield in my car.
Here is my new windshield.
PILKINGTON
SOLAR
Laminuted AS-1 DOT 177
M62 A X LNSG L
DDW1325
Yeah, I saw that picture in that post when I did my searches before I posted. That is exactly what I'm afraid mine is going to look like.
Should I call the shop and insist they replace it with a HUD windshield or should I go look at it with the HUD powered on and see how it looks for blur problems first?
I'm leaning towards insisting I get HUD glass regardless of how this windshield looks.
you'd know if you paid for a HUD windshield. lol, this wouldn't be your first post on the subject..
what I mean is, you would have posted on here and asked if a non-HUD would work when they showed you the price(assuming you don't have windshield coverage on your insurance policy)
There is a shop here that has 5 or 6 OEM HUD windshield's for $349.65 installed.
Wow. Buy one on spec and have it ready for when you need it. I've heard prices in excess of $1000
Obviously, the HUD projects onto the screen and the issue is whether the windshield you have fitted will take the image without any distortion. IIRC the HUD has a different lamination construction to act as a better "screen".
For the OP, I'd say it depends what you paid for. If you were insured then I'd insist they fit a HUD windshield. If you paid for it, I'd see whether you get any distortion. If it looks OK I'd be tempted to live with it. JMHO.

I have thought about it many times. They did my 07 Tacoma glass. It was an OEM glass and cost me $102.36 installed. I was talking to the guy about the HUD glass and told him what I had seen as far as the price and he was shocked when I told them they were close to 1K. He said "I guess I should get a few more and store them"

Mine has a replacement windshield on my '98 and it doesn't have the HUD glass. i added HUD shortly before having to replace the glass. It didn't change between the original glass(non-hud) and the replacement from the glass company

Look for an old Vert windshield surround and hang it on the garage wall. It'd be a talking point

Have to agree with the others - if you paid for a HUD windshield or have coverage through your insurance company, then insist they install a HUD one. If you're footing the bill, see how well the HUD display shows up on the one they put in before you request a different one.
This is an insurance claim, so I think I should get a HUD windshield like the car had originally. Has anyone seen a PILKINGTON HUD windshield? Does it say HUD on it? I would assume it does.
I called the shop, he is calling the insurance company and making arrangements to get the correct glass in it.
The shop was aware the new glass did not say HUD on it, but apparently the glass installer said it was in fact HUD glass even though the label didn't say that.
After the old glass was removed the glass installer and manager of the body shop both sat in the seat and looked at the HUD image and decided it worked.
I'm not going to point any fingers, I'm just not sure how this could happen. The guy that did the install was the owner of the glass company.
Hopefully the insurance company agrees and this gets corrected.
