It's hard to believe that it was 69-years ago. My Dad, who passed away in September, was stationed in Hawaii and left there just a few weeks before Pearl Harbor. They are truly the greatest generation!
My grandfather (moms dad) was there for the attack. He was stationed on the USS Monaghan and lucky were not attacked. I use to love to listen to him talk about the attack. He had some of the best war stories. He also chose not to ever go back to Hawaii once he left the Navy. After he passed in 2002 my mother gave me all his medals he received while in the Navy. I have them on display in my home as I am very proud of his service. I thank each and every person who is serving or who has served in the armed forces. Without you we would not be free!
I'm the son of a WWII Navy veteran who served aboard the USS Alabama during the war. It is neat to show my son his grandfather's name on the ship's list of those who served on her during the war.
The "Greatest Generation" is rapidly departing this world, last time I heard we were loosing 50 WWII vets per hour.
I had the pleasure of having lunch last week with my Scoutmaster. I knew he was in WWII but never knew his accomplishments until I read them in a book called 'The Fool Lieutenant". He was in the Army Rangers, Company B, 2nd Battalion. Awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart (3x). Not only was he a 2nd dad to me and about 300 other boys, he was a decorated hero that no one ever knew about. Sgt Warren " halftrack" Burmaster is his name if you read the book.
My dad,,now over 88 years old,,spent his war years in the European theater. He STILL has a hard time talking about it!! My mom passed last February,,told me one of the few times she ever saw a tear in his eye,was when we were as Scott A.F.B. as I boarded a plane to California heading for Vietnam!! Guess it brought back memories for him!! I thought ONE year was bad enough,,,many of the WW2 folks spent 4 years in battle,,I can't even imagine that type of hell!!! Thank you to ALL veterans and service people!!!:ch eers:
I've been to Pearl Harbor more than once and it is a very sobering experience to see the U.S.S. Arizona from the Memorial and to see all the names of those who lost their lives that sad day. Lets all take a moment to remember all of those brave souls who serve our country past and present.
"Yesterday, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.
The United States was at peace with that nation, and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our secretary of state a formal reply to a recent American message. While this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or armed attack.
It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.
Yesterday the Japanese government also launched as attack against Malaya.
Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.
Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam.
Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.
Last night Japanese forces attacked Wake Island.
And this morning the Japanese attacked Midway Island.
Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.
As commander in chief of the Army and Navy I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us. . ." ~ President Franklin D. Roosevelt

Our freedom is here because the greatest generation gave all and I am still so lucky to be a free man because of them and the Soliders who have followed in there footsteps
My Dad is in Arlington Cemetary after serving in both the Army and the Marines. My mother is now 88 years old and was a Wave nurse during the WWII. I think I'll call her and thank her for her service.
Thank you for all who served and have lost their lives defending our country.
In reflection, I can't help but think of the comparisons to the world we live in today.
Our enemy attacked us at Pearl Harbor. We responded with swift and decisive action that basically ended the war and our enemy never attacked us again and over time has turned into one our best allies.
I know our enemy today is not a country or military, rather an extremist ideology, however I can't help be wonder if our response was accurate. However, I don't want to turn this into a political thread.
