Default Turn signal problems....

I am in my 3rd day of test driving a 2000 coupe....car is clean as new and a blast to drive....but issues seem to keep popping up....this evening the turn signals quit working intermittenlly....I can move the stalk and the signal may work, not work, come on after a few seconds and quit working after a few seconds...

I did a search but could find nothing....is this a common problem with the C5 or unusual?...

I got the same issue. Works for the most part but mysteriously will not respond from time to time It is happening frequently enough where I really need to get this fixed...

Happens to mine, too (2001). I did some checking on the forum a few weeks back, and the consensus is that this is due to the turn signals being routed through the hazard flasher. The hazard flasher eventually goes bad (from lack of regular use), but I hear it's fairly difficult to replace. Most seem to buy a generic flasher module and wire the turn signals separately, as that's much simpler than replacing the hazard flasher - do a search in this area and there are a few threads with pics.

Yep, it is most likely the flasher unit high in the dash where the hazard switch is. ....it IS the hazard switch.

Two fixes:

A bypass unit that I hear is easy(ish) to install.

A new unit which really isn't that hard using the "through the radio hole" technique.

I did the latter, didn't take long and I learned a lot about my interior. But I also ended up re-routing the wire harness down into the driver-side footwell and hiding it under the plastic tunnel panel. That way, if it goes out again, it is just a snap off, snap on....done. I left the old unit there just to hold the button and make it look right.

There are plenty of fixit threads here to do either of these.

Thanks for the replys....looks like a common problem with a fairly easy fix so I wont factor it into my decision to buy the car...

It could be the hazard warning switch but it could also be the turn switch itself. The reason I say that is you seem to be getting intermittent operation when you're using the signals. Both switches are notoriously unreliable.

Next time it fails, recycle the hazard switch firmly a few times and see if it clears. If it doesn't, try the same with the turn switch. Hopefully it'll be obvious which one is faulty.

The good news is if it is the T/S it's much easier to change. Some have had success by just cleaning up the contacts with electronics cleaner. A quick squirt into the switch may work. If not, there are DIY threads showing how to strip it down and clean it or replace it in total. Its easy to do without too much stripping down.

If its the hazard switch, you need to either fit the bypass or replace the flasher unit. To do the latter officially you need to take out the console but as Oh 2 Fun says there's a work around by removing the radio.

Either way how about asking the seller to buy the parts?

Did you actually pull the lamps out and look at them? They don't last forever and a lamp filament might just be hanging there, connecting sometimes and others not.

The flashers do start flashing very quick with a loud clicking off and on.......and will not work if the signal is not working...

My 2000 did the same thing. I installed the bi-pass flasher cable, took 20 minutes and $60, 3 years later all remains well. GO for it.

I just got my hyperflash bipass harness today and when I installed it (took 30 min), it works great! It solved my problem. It was hyperflashing with no LEDs installed. I did find a bad bulb, but it did the same thing after replacing it. I am glad this did the trick.
