Default Question About Learners Permit Driving

Attention Florida Drivers...

My 15 year-old daughter just received her Learner's Permit. Be afraid! Be very afraid!

Seriously, how have you other Corvette and C5 drivers tackled the insurance issue? I have my C5 and other two vehicles all insured under Geico. Can I limit her driving to a specific vehicle or vehicles?

A friend told me his insurance company would not allow him to do that and that his teenage driver had to be covered on all vehicles under policy.

I have also been considering moving the Corvette under it's own declared value policy with the NCM. If I do that, will that help lower the costs, etc.

I appreciate any ideas!

Thanks!

As far as I know the insurance company wants to know of ALL licensed drivers in the household.

When I arrived in Vegas my son was 17, a Brit (but holding a UK license) and driving the Camaro as his main car. For the first 6 months he was there he was on the equivalent of $10,000 a year. Thanks goodness that when he got his NV license it dropped to something vaguely sensible.

At that time USAA had dropped foreign military cover leaving me high and dry even though I'd been insured for 3 years previously in TX. As an aside, I had a fun conversation when I accused them of prejudice because of my ethnic origin!

I did a lot of searching on the internet for an affordable policy.

When my kids were that age (long time ago) I had Nationwide Ins. and I checked with my agent and was told that i could sign a form that stated that they were not allowed to drive the Vette. If they did, they would not be covered and I would be the one that had all the liability.

I will stay north of the Skyway for awhile. Thanks for the heaqds up.

I have four vehicles, and four licensed drivers in the household. Mercury insurance wants each driver assigned to a specific vehicle. I"m on the Vett, the other three are assigned to the remaining cars. Any one of the drivers can drive any one of the vehicles and is covered. You could even buy a "beater" car,( with liability only) and have her assigned to the beater, but she could still drive the other cars in the household. I think!

Assign your daughter to the cheapest vehicle in your fleet to save money. You would still be covered in the event of an accident, unless she is specifically excluded on a particular vehicle.

Here at the NCM Insurance Agency we would want to exclude her from driving the car, but still list her on the policy. The rate will be cheaper, and you could have that agreed value.

Let me know if you have any questions..

Thanks!!

To get accurate information I would talk to your Geico agent. What happens in other states with other insurance companies does not apply to you.
For instance, our 2002 Z06, 2000 BMW M roadster, 1974 Pantera and 1936 Packard are all on collector car insurance. I have been told our 21 year old daughter can drive any of them at any time I wish to let her do so. Does that apply to your situation? NO. Talk with your company and get accurate information.

When my kids were 16 I had to name the car that they were the principle drive in and it definately wasn't the Vette. My Vette rates never really went up.

even if you can exempt the young driver from the Vette, wouldn't that leave you wide open for a big lawsuit & no insurance if she used it without permisison for example??

C'mon! What teenager would do something without their parent's permission?!

Thanks for the all the feedback. Obviously, I need to call and talk with the Gecko (although his name is not Stanley) and confirm options and costs.

I plan to start her with our battle proven mini-van and then eventually pass on my current daily driver (Acura TLS) to her when I'm ready for my next business car. The Corvette will be off limits as it's pretty much a weekend, low mileage, pleasure driver already.

When my daughter got her driver's license, I did arrange with the insurance company to exclude her from driving my C5. They did not have any problem with that and I'm sure it saved me a ton of money on my insurance.
