Default Intake removal - step 2

Well, I got my intake off today. Actually pretty easy, took about an hour. Anyway, below are some dirty pics and the last pic is of the throttle body, full of oil. I assume the intake has a lot in it too.
Is this common for the LS1.
Don't remember any of my other vettes like this. Any suggestions?
Also pics at the rear showing the OPS & cam position sensor. Don't know if the oil around it is from the sensor or the intake. Never had any codes with the sensor. BTW, everything you see is original. 1st time the intake has been off.
One other question....the tray (we used to call these windage trays, don't know what they call them today) seems to have oil along the edges. Front, sides & rear. Don't know if it is coming from the tray or the intake. Do these or can these leak?
Thanks,
Gregg

The LS1 does seem to suck in some oil into the throttle body and the intake - some owners install a catch can to help control that.

It looked to me like some of it was running to the front (timing cover) and to the rear on both sides of the bell housing (guess that's what it is). Car doesn't smoke or burn any oil. Some of it is going into the head ports, I know. What I'm trying to say ( & not very well), is or could oil be leaking from the intake and leaking out the front and rear. Possibly from the intake gaskets. These were original GM gaskets on it (11 years).
Thanks

its called the valley tray/pan. the windage tray sits between the oil pan and crank.

i doubt thats leaking, probally just really dirty from the years. dirt gets inbetween the intake and heads pretty easy

get a catch can or route the lines to there own filter and cap off the intake and tb nipples

It cleaned up pretty good, will clean it more tomorrow.

You're right on the windage tray, remember now.
Which is a good catch can to get. Everyone I've looked at says their is the best.

Also, what is a good way, if any to clean the inside of the intake.
Guess I will take the throttle body off tomorrow & clean it as well. Will I have to replace the gasket betwenn the throttle body and intake? This is a stock unit, so what size mm is it?

Thanks,
Gregg

TB-78mm, the gasket should be fine.
take the intake all apart and wash it with simple green or something like that spray it down with water. then let it dry out and your good to go.

Get a catch can for the oil consumption!

Clean everything up as much as you can with a shop vac and some towels, you might tape off the intake holes and spray it with some carb cleaner

Get a new Valley Cover gasket from GM (fairly cheap) and pull the cover and replace the gasket, torque to specs.

Clean up TB with carb cleaner

Install new manifold

and once running you might want to Sea Foam the motor to clean the tops of the pistons of all the buildup and the runners of all the oilk cumsimtion

Thanks,Matt

What is the valley cover gasket? Is that for the flat cover in the center of the block beneath the manifold?

Thanks,
Gregg

While your intake is off, it may be a good time to replace the smog pump check valve and knock sensors in the back.

And here's some info about your PCV valve, its function, what some companies are doing to prevent blowby oil from getting circulated back into your engine, and a whole lot more:

yes but i wouldnt worry about that. i doubt its leaking. all that stuff came from the manifold area. if you look in between each port there is room for trash and dirt to get in and under the manifold

Where are the smog pump check valve & knock sensors & how would I know if the are bad? Have you used the Watts aluminum or glass catch cans? The glass would be good in that you can see how much oil is being collected.
Thanks,
Gregg

If you look at the 1st & 3rd pic (dirty pics), it looks as though oil is flowing out the front and rear of the manifold, at the valley cover, even though I had no leaks. I'm trying to figure out where this oil is coming from, any ideas? When I changed my oil filter it appeared that there was stains ( i guess that is what you would call it) on the front (near the timing cover) & right rear (pass. side) of the pan.

The valve cover don't appear to be leaking. At least, I don't see any evidence of it. Why would I need to canhge the valve cover gaskets? Did I miss something?

Thanks, Gregg
