Default DRL Help...

Hey guys,

I have a '98 coupe and recently the passenger-side DRL went out. I replaced the bulb but that did not solve the problem. However, I did notice that the passenger-side light was working when I used my turn signal. So even with the new bulb, turn signal worked, DRL didn’t. I thought there might be a problem with the micro-relay so I switched numbers 38 and 40 thinking that the faulty DRL would now be on the driver-side. No such luck. The driver-side still works while the passenger-side does not. If I had a problem with the actual passenger-side harness, one wouldn’t expect the turn signal to work… right? Anyway, anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be? Thanks in advance.

If no one provides you an answer in a reasonable amount of time, try contacting forum member Bill Curlee - he is very knowledgeable on the C5 electrical system.

I just had to replace the DRL socketsin my '98. The old ones were burned and would lose contact with the bulb.
Parts stores should carry or be able to order Dorman replacements. I think the number is 82885.

Remove the closeout panels ( 5 screws ) or snake your hand in the brake cooling duct to replace.

My OE dealer replaced (according to service records) socket went bad too, shorted out, NAPA has them for $25+ and perfect fit.

I can't get my hands through brake duct without cutting the S#1t out of them. You can also get to socket by removing headlight surround panel (raise manually) and hood rest bolt, then you are only on knees instead of laying on back. Slide brake duct back and pop socket out through it to rewire/splice.

Good luck

My guess would be that you have some water getting into the housing which may be affecting the socket. Its quite common as the DRLs burn the plastic housing allowing water ingress.

I'd pull the housing and inspect it. If you find corrosion on the socket, thats the problem.

Park/Turn Signal/Side Marker Lamp Replacement
Removal Procedure

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
2. Remove the front fascia lower closeout panel.

3. Release the brake caliper cooling duct from the front fascia, and position the duct aside.

4. Remove the front turn signal lamp bracket retaining spring from the lamp bracket.
5. Remove the lamp bracket retaining spring from the front fascia.
6. Remove the front turn signal lamp bracket retaining screws.

7. Disconnect the sockets from the lamp.

8. Remove the lamp, with the bracket, from the vehicle.
9. Remove the lamp to bracket retaining screws.
10. Remove the lamp from the bracket.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the front park/turn signal and sidemarker lamp into position on the front turn signal lamp bracket.
Notice
Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
2. Install the front park/turn signal and sidemarker lamp to bracket retaining screws.
Tighten
Tighten the front park/turn signal and sidemarker lamp to bracket retaining screws to 2 N•m (18 lb in).
3. Install the sockets to the lamp.
4. Install the lamp, with the bracket, to the front fascia.
5. Align the lamp to the opening in the front fascia and hold the lamp firmly in place against the fascia, while installing the front turn signal lamp bracket retaining screws.
Tighten
Tighten the front turn signal lamp bracket retaining screws to 3 N•m (27 lb in).
6. Install the lamp bracket retaining spring to the front fascia.
7. Install the front turn signal lamp bracket retaining spring to the lamp bracket.
8. Position the brake caliper cooling duct to the front fascia and press the duct toward the fascia to secure.
9. Install the front fascia lower closeout panel. Refer to Close Out Panel - Front Bumper Fascia Lower in Bumpers.

This always happens.

The incandescent gets too hot & ruins the housing (water) or the harness...

The resolve:
Get new front corners lenses with LED bulbs...

Trust me on this..

Default Still need help!

Okay guys, I still need help getting my passenger side DRL to work. I really like the look of the DRLs but I think I'm going to have to use a jumper to by-pass them because I have no idea how to fix one...

My passenger side one went out, but my driver's side still works. I've tried replacing the bulb, micro-relay, and wiring harness, all with no success. Anything else I could try?

Thanks!

Pm Bill Curlee, he will give you a list of things to check and you will most likely have it fixed within a couple days of talking to him.

The DRL bulb is a dual function bulb. You have a hot for parking lights, a hot for turn signals and a common ground. The bulb is dual filament so you can have a bad bulb yet the turn signals and park lights could still work. You may have been unlucky and fitted a bad bulb. Swap with the known good bulb to check if the new one is OK.

Pull the A2 fuse on the engine bay panel. That will inhibit the DRLs. Check that you have all the other functions still working. You should still have parking lights and turn signals. If they are working then the fault is on the DRL circuit (or bulb). If the fault persists it's probably a bulb holder issue.

Check that and post up what you find.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try pulling fuse 2 this weekend when I'm back in town. As far as the bulb goes, I tested the drivers side bulb which I knew worked fine and still the passenger side DRL would not work... Also I already replaced the socket, no luck. Also replaced the micro-relay already.

I'll definitely test fuse 2, but I think I'm gonna need Curlee's help.
