Which would be the better route to take in upgrading my diff to a 3.42, from a 3.15? I can get a used ring and pinion for $100 but how much and how easy is it for a shop to install it correctly? Which is better and which is cheaper? Also, I wouldn't mind going to a 3.73 but most people recommended I go with a 3.42 and stall with my auto.

We will need a little more information, however since your inquiring about an upgrade to 3:42 well assume you have an A4 with 2:73's.
I believe it can be done however it's not a simple swap since they are different sizes. I've heard that someone has come up with a kit to make the change, but I'm not sure who. From what I've seen on the forum its best to go with a whole new differential. Lots of folks report buying used ones for about $400
I went from 2:73's to 3:42's and went with an RPM build. Great bang fit the buck even though I paid close to $1,200. Also upgrade your converter if and when you make the change!
I really took a hard look at doing this job myself. Got info from several very credible people on this forum and prices from Gene Culley to do it my self. I have a lot of mechanical experience and have set up several conventional rear ends as well as industrial ring and pinion set ups on high speed equipment. These differentials are a lot different and require special set up unlike any I have ever done. I made the descision to not do it. I think for the difference in price of materials, the risk of making a mistake and ruining the whole thing, I am going to buy one. Why scrimp on something I have never done, don't have anyone to help me that knows the process and for a few dollars more, can purchase a reliable rear end with any gear ration I want. Just my opinion.
